Well, it finally got cold here--as usual, Blacktopper I and I went on our New Years Day ride. The weather was about 40 degrees with full sun. And we stopped for a hot chocolate, so it was agreeable all in all.
January 2 resulted in what you see below.
Curtis (WSW) rebuilt a starter that I burned up on the way home from Sturgis, so we put it on the lift at Blacktoppers shop to change that out and give Blacktopper back his spare. I then remembered the rear pulley was really worn down (I mean this Dog has sharp teeth--pulley teeth, that is)....so we pulled it off in order to replace it with my spare. But it's just polished aluminum, so it'll have to go to MecLec in California to be chromed.
As long as we were sending stuff to be chromed, we took off my Mean Streets Avalon front end and disassembled it to have it re-chromed, is it has about 60,000 miles on it, and has some chips, to say nothing of a fair amount of sandblasting from serious roadwork.
So tomorrow I will send off all the above along with a few other items.
Now---- it's detailing with Mothers Billet, Liquid Glass....and of course, chrome polish.

We had a laugh about it when we talked about how anxious we were the first few times we lit into these bikes. But we have a heated shop, the correct shop manuals, good tools, BD Forum advice, and we work with care. Didn't think I'd see the day when we would see this kind of tear down before lunch as routine (and fun). There is indeed something deeply satisfying about being able to manage this.
In Zen and the Art, Robert Pirsig says:
“The study of the art of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniature study of the art of rationality itself. Working on a motorcycle, working well, caring, is to become part of a process, to achieve an inner peace of mind. The motorcycle is primarily a mental phenomenon.”
Sure hope it is ready for Daytona....image.jpgimage.jpg

I always enjoy your write ups and was sitting here with a smile on my face, almost envious of the fun working on your bike with your buddy... until I scrolled down and saw how naked she was and then I might have gasped a little! At least this is one thing that Winter is good for! Glad you got your New Year's ride in first. Many happy trails in 2016!

I call it loving on my bike. The wife comes down to my shop, and says, " What are you doing to it now?" I just say, nothing, just loving on her.

Nice writeup! Tis the season for a tear down!

You've also inspired me to pick up that book. I know it's about 40 years old but figure I should give it a read.

You know I was just wondering the other day If you found seals for your forks? I assume you did if you sent them off for chrome. Have you not done those seals before?

What's Rodger doing over there hiding behind his ridgeback? Why do you guys got that up on the lift?

The heated shop is the key.tuff working in the cold.
Agreed! My AC gets used more than the heat here in Texas but that was the first thing I Installed when I moved into the house.

Actually the seals etc are all HD Softail. I have never done them, but the right one started seeping. After disassembly, I think it won't be too hard.
You'll love Zen and the Art. I need to re-read it myself. Really all about quality.
I think Roger was pulling off the Trottas from the Ridgeback

60k miles on the same seals? Wow!!! I wonder why those forks get better longevity then the stock BDM. Are they inverted?

I bought the book for my kindle earlier. I really ought to read more than I do so I thought it would be a good read.

Nice write up. I the same paint scheme on my 2011 mastiff it's my favorite bike.
It has been said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery...very true here, because I sent my painter a photo of your bike and told him to paint mine like that. Seriously the best looking paint out there.

Ya the dealer I bought it from ordered it to have less red and more gold in the coloring. So I think a little extra attention was paid to the paint job because it seemed to have more flames than others I've seen. Not sure if I mentioned that to you. That's my thought anyway. I'm going to ride that mastiff to Florida and back it's pretty comfortable and my favorite of all !

That's a goal I have was looking to do it this summer to see my dad and his new place in Ocala but he unexpectedly passed away. I still have two sisters there so I will still go for it not sure when.

Ah ! Even more the reason to do the ride!

When my dad passes I plan to dip my toes on both coast for him. I'd love to do that ride with him, unfortunately I just know realistically that prob won't happen.
