MY FRIEND HAS A BIG DOG 2004 CHOPPER AND HAS HAD BATTERY ISSUES WITH IT REPLACED 3 BATTERIES IN 2 MONTHS .WE CHECKED THE CHARGING SYSTEM TO ENSURE CHARGING. ALL SEEMED FINE CHARGING BATTERY .NOW WHEN THE BATTERY FAILS IT WILL NOT TAKE A CHARGE EVEN OUT OF BIKE AND ON CHARGER. ITS LIKE BATTERY JUST WONT DO ANYTHING JUST COMPLETLY DEAD.IF BIKE SITS FOR DAYS WITH NEW CHARGED BATTERY ALL IS FINE IF HE RIDES FOR EXTENDED TIME IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO WIND UP WITH BAD BATTERY...SO MY QUESTION IS IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE REGULATOR TO BE BAD AND JUST KEEP ON CHARGEING THE BATTERY UNTILL IT BURNS UP THE BATTERY.AND CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP ON THIS IM THINKING BAD REGULATOR .

What's the voltage when the bike is running. It might be charging to much, and cooking the battery.
Ron, didn't we talk about you yelling in your posts! :oldhardlaugh:Just kidding Ron, but when you type is all caps it seems as if you are pissed off or yelling! :oldsmile:Lol! Anyway, I think what Shannon said is probably right, start the bike and put your Multi Meter on the battery and slowly rev up the engine, your voltage shouldn't get over around 14.5 volts or so, if it does then you probably got a bad regulator!

I would; tape/zip-tie/b-cord a VOM to the front of the tank, handlebar clamp; so as to watch the action with the meter set at 20v I take a long ride.
I place my 3-variables before me and eliminate 1 of 3 components:

1. Vo/Reg: I am watching the volts as I ride. The digital readout says anywhere from 14.1 to 14.7v.
a. I see volts displayed under 13v. Vo/Reg is working, it can read a volt and display it.
b. I see volts displayed @ 14v. Vo/Reg is working, it can bleed off 16v.
C. I see volts displayed over 15v, it is the vo/reg [not the stator, not the battery].

2. Stator/Rotor: I am watching a 32a stator with 2 wires coming out the engine case, each pushing 16v up the wire(s).
a. I see volts under 13v I have a stator problem.
b. I see 0v out of the vo/reg I have a stator problem.
c. I see 14v to the battery I have no stator problem [no vo/reg problem].

3. Battery: I am watching Johnny Cheapseats; pepboy/wal-mart/aftmkt a battery into service.
a. I see a cheapass battery and question the quality = Can't hold a charge sitting for a week or days.
b. I see a quality battery sit for months being well charged and starts the bike right up.
c. I see a zip-tied VOM not miss a beat out of the stator or vo/reg = It's time to reach around the trousers and pay up for a harley battery to a yuasa or keep shelling out money for junk ti/china/trash... IF... stator and reg are in good working order.

Signed,

Only your VOM knows for sure.
