Knows some things
New guy brought up a point. I think there might have a thread about this from some while back.
People that are looking to buy a Big Dog are getting on here and running through the threads, and their seeing, " Oh help me, I think my EHC is fried!" so they think if they buy a Dog, their EHC is going to go out too.
So I thought I would start one, so people can see that the EHC is not that common of a problem.
If you are still running the original EHC, post the year, and mileage of your bike. Or if you thought the EHC was the problem, and you found out differently, post what the problem actually was.

I'll start: we all know my bike doesn't have an EHC, it's hard wired, because I got it disassembled, and didn't get all the boxes to put it back together stock. But the other 03 chopper I use to have in my shop, is owned by another guy here in town, has the original EHC, and I believe the mileage is around 25000. The only problem we ever had with it was the plug would fall out, so we zip tied it to hold it tight.

I bought a 08 Ridgeback that the person that owned it burned it up by using a car to jump the bike. I went ahead and bought another EHC and so far its worked fine. The bike has 12,000. I feel alot of people are not aware how careful they need to be around electronics. Kind of like computers....cellphones...and that kind of stuff.

I bought my 05 Bulldog with 1100 miles. I put about 1000 miles on it & the spedo went out, nothin to do with controller. Had the tack go crazy, turned out to be the wire to the coil. 5000 more miles ... no problem at all with the controller until the China made Lightning Start battery shorted out.

Shannon, I think buyers need to know that there is a difference in EHC systems. The older bikes from 03 back used 12 volt positive side control systems with old style switching to control the electronic harness controller. I think these were Thunderheart units. In 2004 BD switched to a low voltage negative side switching system using their own EHC controler. That is when the shit hit the fan. After a couple of years they did get things straightened out and working fairly well.

I am sure some one will correct me if I am wrong.

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
North of 60,000 on my 2008 K9.My spare EHC has over 50,000 road miles as a passenger in bubble wrap. Original still in the bike without a problem ever.
Original clutch cable too.
Don't ask about transmissions and exhaust valve guides!
