Baker OD6, SHifting to 6th keeps changing......thoughts?

SO this year February 2015, I installed a Tranny rebuilt from Baker. all has been awesome.

Last week when riding I had a random problem. Then the next ride I took on sunday it was showing its face more and more..... SO I have not riden this week.

Normally a OD6 tranny, when you shift to 6th. you can check your in 6th, by trying to shift to a 7th gear.... which there is none, so the shifter moves freely up with no clicking like a gear. you can feel the ease of the shifter and know your in 6th.

Some bike trannys "Dead head" and if you where in 6th, and tried to shift to a fale 7th. the shifter would simple not move up....


So this tranny has always be for and after the rebuild NOT dead headed. so I could move the shifter up but it just would not do anything....

THEN ransomly it was dead headed.. cant move it other then into 5th.... then could put it back into 6th... and i could do a false 7th... 1-2-3 times depending on nothing.. then it would lock.. and be dead headed..

SOMEthing has changes inside the tranny. Not good, and Would rather not pull tranny out again ifi dont have to. Plan to pull top cap, and inspect a shifter paw, and teh drum its self?,,,

any ideas?

Yes I did and they told me....

"I would double check all of your shifting linkage. Make sure the shift lever is not stripped out where it meets the shifter pawl shaft coming out of the transmission.

I would also remove the top cover and inspect the inside of the top cover for any interference marks from the shift pawl. With the top cover off, I would also inspect your shifter pawl adjustment to make sure that is accurate. Also, with the top cover off, can you identify the PN# on the shift drum itself?"

Now I checked shifter linkage at the first stop light, let alone when i got home.. its all solid, its freely moving the shift level. and it bette rnot be stripped since they replaced the damn thing. and its not...

but going to pull top apart soon, just wanted to know if anyone here had been through this before?

Fwiw, I had some of those issues. My problem was the splined pawl on the Outside of the trans. The bolt had come loose but not so loose as to fall off. Gave the appearance of being right. Tightened it up and adjusted the linkage, problem gone. I hope yours is as easy?

I will for sure check it one last time and put a wrench on it... the tranny is brand new.... so taking the top off is going to piss me off.

But when I looks I swear the linkage was moving it.. also why would it sometimes stop.. does not make since.

It doesn't take much to slip these fine splines if the bolt is loose....js.

Ok guys. Got s answer... Triple checked my linkage and it's all fine and right,

So today I Took the top cap off so I could see what was going on. Basically what I am used to is not correct. A baker OD6 should dead head at 6th gear...mine just happen to have never done it... So new tranny rebuild and it still was not, which felt normal. But after some miles and vibrating the it started randomly doing what it's supposed to do....hence this thread.

So there is some adjustment on the shifter paw, and mine needs to be tweaked basically. In the video you can see how it has been working.. The front hook on the paw riding on the shift drum peg... Which allows me to false shift to "7th."... Then after I do a false shift to 7 or just cruse in 6th the shift paw is falling back around 2 pegs on the drum LIKE ITS SUPPOSED to do.

So with some adjustment the shifter paw will drop around 2 pegs like normal, and dead head in 6th gear every time.

It's not fixed yet, but hopefully will be. In the mean time it rides fine ha.

So I adjusted it the slightest amount counter clockwise. Working great now. Dead heading and all.

What did Baker say? Shouldn't they have "adjusted" this?

My Trans is on the way there now, so I hope they will stand behind it.

They actually. Told me clockwise 1/8 of a turn.

That's the wrong way... So I did what I needed and it's done.

Yes they adjusted it but its a fine fine fine adjacent

great info. Feel like they should have done so. What exactly are you adjusting?

The Eccentric Screw.... can google it but its black allen/hex screw, with a locking nut to locks the adjustment in place. its located right beside the shift lever on the out side of the case.

basicly your adjust it to center the Shifter paw on the Shift drum pegs. Supposed to adjust it in 3rd gear. But to be honest. I played wit hmine in all gears, and got it working how i wanted. Counter clock wise, by less then a 1/8th.
