Help with understanding 2 pc tank

I have a Pitbull with a two piece tank. Can someone explain to me how this works. Is the main the right side tank and the reserve the left side or is the main both tanks but the reserve is just the .5 gallon on the left side? The tanks are connected at the bottom as well as near the top by fuel hoses. I don't ride much so I want to understand it a little better so I can gauge my mileage to the tank better. I could be way wrong, but I believe the tanks are tied together by the hose in front lower tank area. I think the fuel selector valve has 2 inlets. The main, I believe sits higher in the tank and the reserve is lower. If I'm wrong please correct me.

The tanks are tied together with a cross over line at the bottom front of the tanks. This allows the gas to flow from the right tank to the left. The carb draws from the left tank. The connecting hose on the top of the tanks is a breather hose that lets air move back and forth between the tanks. The cap on the right tank has a breather in it allowing the tanks to breath as fuel is used. The left cap is not vented. The left cap is also left hand thread. You must fill both tanks to get a full fuel load. Depending on you're riding style you should get 28 to maybe 32 miles per gallon. I set my trip meter at fill ups and look for gas around 100 to 120 miles.

I guess this all came from when I first purchased the bike and had to ride it 200+ miles home. The left gas cap was too tight so I only filled up the right side. I thought both sides would equalized through the hoses if I just filled the right side tank slowly. Well, I got about 75-80 miles and the bike started to sputter. Luckily, I was by an exit ramp and there was a gas station just off of it. Filled it up and back on the rode with no issues. Since then, I filled up every time I hit 65 miles. I wasn't sure from that day if I started with no to little gas on the left side or if the main was just from the right tank only. Now that you guys help clarify this and that I'm able to loosen the left gas cap now, I will fill both tanks up each time and try for 100 before filling up. Thanks again.
