Starter/bendix wire

Recently someone posted a pic of the hot wire from the starter to the "bendix" (maybe not the right term) with the insulation cracked open exposing the wire. I was at the local shop this week end and they had a 06 with a 1/4" wide open split in the wire, 2 other 06's with the wire showing signs of cracking and 1, 07 showing the same. If you have these you may want to check it out. An 05 was okay but it looked like a new starter. My 05 looks okay as well. Since its winter and down time you may want to check it out.:willy_nilly:

Mine is gone. It was dry rotted/cracked so I just took the rest off. No big deal for me so far. Looks a little neater.

It's a "brush on" rubber that is supposed to act like electrical tape, thought I mentioned it a while ago...

I am waiting to see what they will do warranty wise, last time they said they would fix it, this time they said they would have to replace the starter and wouldn't cover it under warranty?

BUMP.....

I spent some time today doing a much needed cleaning and checking over my 06 K-9 and noticed this:

Bike starts and runs fine (touch wood) but I will call the dealer on Tuesday (closed Mondays) and see if he will replace as I would expect this to be covered under warranty.

My cable was fine when this was first posted by VAC so I would highly recommend that you check yours from time to time.

cheers,

I got it on mine too and I've wrapped electical tape around it for now but I need to do something else - are the ends easy to pull to get some shrink wrap on it? I had a quick try (very quick) with no joy and didn't want to force it

Called dealer today who recommended that I put electrical tape on it and they would check it on the next service......I'll go with the heat shrink.

Just went and checked my 07 Bulldog, and I have the exact same thing....hmmmm seems like a pattern is forming. Are you listening folks at the factory?

Does it look like the rubber is dry rotting or is the wire harness that BDM run through the starter power cable causing the damage?

I've got a customers bike that appears to be getting worn by the harness.

Seems kinda dumb that they route the wire harness through there!

DV,

Mine does not appear dry rotted at all....seems more like it was stressed at the bends (maybe heat related?) and just ripped.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

DOGVET, the insulation is still soft and pliable, but it rips at the slightest attempt to flex it. at least that is what happens on my '07 K9. it is split both radially and longitudinally. ????????? :( :( :( :(

I've got one on my lift that is doing the same thing...doesn't appear dry rotted, just cracking every which way. I've got a Spyke on my bike and the black boot that covers the nut is cracking but the cable itself is in good shape.

that could be one hell of a light show if one of those wires from the harness chaffed and shorted when you hit the starter button!!!
