My :zz2cents: all silver would have been better. At this point if it were mine I'd have him paint the stars silver and throw in some dark red wine colored stripes where the black stripes in the flag are. So you'd end up with a red and silver striped flag with the blue in the corner and silver stars.

I'm gonna have to agree with this statement, the silver stars will bring it more "together" as artwork and your desired theme. Think of it as the silver stripes matching the silver stars, then the Blue won't stick out or look out of place, you wouldn't have to add the red-wine or blackcherry color but if you did you'd be closer to a "dark" flag and maybe not what your theme was but still very cool. But it's your choice Bro.

As for the paint job- that's real artwork there, look at how that flag waves and curls! Nice work! :up:

Made my decision!!!

Alright, after a long few days of driving my wife crazy and the artist too! I spoke to the artist and told him what I thought of the paint change. I really was on the fence of keeping it or starting all over from scratch. Well I spoke to the artist today and he flat out told me he would do whatever I decided and would sand the entire tank back down and start over... i said I would take the tank home and give it a look on the bike. I have decided!!! I really like the way it looks on the bike. The blue is hard to see until it hits the sun and then it really POPS... and looks good IMHO... it is really a change from alot of the flags I have seen painted and should really look good with the blue Dakota Digital.. cant wait to see the rest of it.. appreciate the feedback... I have attached some new photos that hopefully do it justice..

I have voiced my opinions to my "Artist" to stay on track with 'original plan-photos' on my paint job...
Like you I want, What I Want! Which was:

Copy the design and paint scheme from the photos of an existing paint job.

I hope I have caught mine at a point sooner (than Yours) to keep everyone happy and with the understanding that anyone engaging in custom one off paint work must communicate often, be willing to do what the paying customer wants and take guidance from the customer to get to the correct finished product.

Allowing for:
a) Progress checks
b) Approvals at different phases of the job
c) Mid course corrections
d) Change Orders

I am currently at a-b-c above trying avoid a result like yours!
Sorry if I opened a bad wound here...


In My Humble Opinion:
Anyone dealing with customers or the human race in general, must realize that there will be differences of opinions; and that clear communication, the ability to adapt & recover are pre-requisites to success in any business.

In the End:
Is it about wining Awards and feeding your ego; or growing a Busine$$ with happy, referring customers?

Paul, I liked the muted black over flag!
colors OK with me; but would have liked the stripes to extend down to the bottom edge across the whole tank. I used to have a helmet painted like that.

I think he/you did the right thing by adding the blue. It's subtle but added a lot to it. IMHO black/ silver would be a little bland.

I struggle with art too, and sometimes giving the artist some latitude is the right thing to do.

If you stay with the blue, which appears to be a Candy Cobalt, I think it would look better if the stars were silver, like the stripes. Here's why, sinces the lighter color (silver) appears to represent the white stripes, the stars should match. Viewed from certain angles, the cobalt blue should almost appear black and blend into the tank. The silver stars then would be more representative of your original thoughts of the black and silver flag.

You need to differ between an artist and a technician. Most good artists are also good technicians, but not always is the reverse true. But if you just want a technical job done, that needs to be part of the agreement.
I do not have a source for this quote,but it sure applies here:
" A true artist expands your awareness of the world instead of merely serving as a distraction."
Paul, I think that paint shows your guy as really creative and also a great technician, and I would think twice about changing that design unless you are bound and determined to have a grey scale flag.

This was an old post! I painted over the flag and went to a gloss black solid!

This is so very true. I'm a good example of it. Even after 4 years of art, I still struggle with every design I make. Some times redoing it several times and changing my mind in the middle, because I've given up. I can see what I want in my head, but my hands can't duplicate it.
Give me a pile of scrap medal, and I'll build you a rocket. That because I'm more technical.
As for the flag on the tank, that's awesome, that's art. And the only one it needs to satisfy is it's creator.

Paul, I tend to agree with JJ and Bruce on the cobalt blue and silver stars. It looks like he did a fine job on the paint and all, but as everyone else has pointed out, your bike = your call. you are the final decision maker. I also really like the solid black.
