Opinions needed

Guys i have a 04 Ridgback with about 5500 miles..Still has the orginal EHC. Should i go ahead and spend the $400 and replace the EHC or wait for the damn thing to strand me on a ride??. My dealer mentioned this to me but like me sorta hates to remove a part that not yet has screwed me...My feeling is to go ahead and bite the bullit an buy the new and improved EHC..
What's your thoughts??

I agree with Lee.....pm Ohmster and see what he says....I know Gas Man still has his original EHC in his scoot.....I have had mine replaced with the newer one last summer....bike shut down twice on my way to Full Throttle....Doc replaced my EHC and have not had a problem since..

Where did you find one for $400? I've heard 529, 465, and 499 from three different dealers.

I was talking to the guys at Cycle City in kingport Tennessee...We tossed the $400 figure but did not get to the point of actually pricing the thing but I was under the impression it would run between $400 $450. I guess I should check to get the price exact. Regardless i will eventually have to replace the thing according to most i talk to.

They really are great guys do deal with. The owner is always willing to help where he can. I bought my puppy used so he did not sell me this bike, You could never tell it by the way he treats me...I take it you are in agreeance to swap it out too...I just dont want get stranded.....

Well I wouldn't fuck with a good thing but I would pull your cable and ensure it's full of die electric grease. And as an added measure I would fill all the connections you can with this grease and even shrink wrap them including the cuircut boards inside you hand controls.

On an older bike like your's I would give the wiring a good check and see if I have any grounded wires or frayed wires and get them re-covered and then......

can,t go by me! my 04 chopper had no horn,[no voltage to it!] head lamp was intermitantly working after an 30 min ride, it was going leave me somewhere very soon so i repl my ehc. with a 2007 k9.

Ray, Thanks for your input....Which cable are you referring to when you say to pull it and check it for grease??. Sorry to sound so stupid as I have ridden bikes most of my life but just not custom style bikes like the BigDogs...I havve looked at all the wires and so far so good there!!!

I'm referring to the big computer type plug that goes into your EHC. BDM did a "service bulletin" a couple years ago to ensure all shops were filling the inside of the plugs with this grease. It will prevent water and other matter from getting inside it.

Pictures on here somewhere on the EHC plugs. Just becareful when reseating it as there are a lot of littel pins in there. Just fill both sides with grease and put it together. It has two screws on each side of it. It's the largest harness assembly under your seat!

If you're that concerned about it and have $450 burning a whole in your pocket... buy one... put it in a safe place at home!

For that price you can buy 2 new non propietary wiring harnesses. Which is the direction I would consider before buying another EHC.

ptcs -- I've got the same year EHC so I'm with you on the concern.

Ray gives good advice and I'd recommend the same. The 2004 EHC are hard to find and reports are BDM has a modified daughter board to add to the current EHC version to work with the 2004 harness.

I've replaced mine after the headlight circuit failed, but with the standard 2004 EHC.

I'm all about PM (preventitive maintenance), but replacing the EHC before it fails sure seems like overkill to me!

There are plenty of 2004's out there on the road with the original EHC :up:

Since few electrical problems are actually the ehc but connection related, inspact all connections (especially them tiny suckers underneath the gas tank).

The ehc is mounted on a location that is prone to lots of vibration whioch really makes the two ehc connectors shake. I've known poeple to do ehc swaps only to find that the problem was connection related. Before swapping ehcs, just clean the connections and load with dielectric grease, reinstall the connectors and see if any symptoms change. No reason to replace an ehc just because it's been on the bike for a while.
