since the Red Line is fully synth and the Bel-Ray isn't will the MTL make any clutch slippage if I use it from now on instead of the Bel-Ray. A lot of the guys on here are saying they use MTL with good results and I'm just wondering if my 07 clutch has different plates maybe then earlier models. Just don't want to take any chances on clutch problems. This may sound a bit dumb of a question but I have always believed that the only really dumb question is the one you DON"T ask.

well I got my question answered. If anyone cares, it 100% fine to use RedLine MTL in late model BDM PRIMARY CASES. As per Mike the service manager at Blackdog. No harm will come to the clutches, in fact he highly recommends it's use as well as Mobil1 in the engine. He also recommends Wicks filters? I'll have to look in to that one. He says BDM is using those during the engine build process now. S&S ok'd the use of them. Hmmm...

BBD, I have some MTL that is brand new that I won't be using. I have a open belt drive now. If you are interested or anyone let me know.

is it normal to find very small metal particals stuck to the magnetic drain plug on my primary? I hadn't changed the fluid for 3500 miles untill today at 8840 miles.

since I put the Red Line HD shockproof in my tranny I seem to have a strange metalic tapping sound coming from what appears to be the tranny when I rev the engine at an idle. Any ideas?

Try putting the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in so nothing is turning in the tranny and see if the noise goes away. If the noise goes away, it ain't your tranny making noise.

In neutral, the mainshaft is still spinning, typically even with the clutch disengaged (oil drag on the clutch pack)

DV, thanks my man. I'll try that tonight when I get home. It is strange that this sound just recently appeared. It's pretty faint but it's there. I don't have any trouble shifting or any clutch slippage. I am using Mobil 1 in my engine, Redline MTL in the primary and of course Red line HD shockproof in the tranny.
The first gear clunk is still there and I thought the HD shockproof would take that away but it didn't. I assume that the clunk is normal. All my Harley's did that. I don't see anything loose or out of the ordinary visually. Just that I'm proably going on this MD/VA/PA ride tomorrow and I didn't want to be the Dog that comes up lame.:rolleyes:

DV, those metal particles were like slivers but they were only about 1/8 of an inch long. and there were only about 3 or 4 of them stuck to the drain plug.
Should I drain the primary again and check for more of them?

You may want to pull the outer primary cover (make sure to get new pre-formed gaskets first), drain it, pull the cover and clean out everything reall good and do a visual inspection. It is also a good time to adjust the primary chain.

I normally remove mine ever other primary oil change which is about every 5000 miles. The gaskets are not that expense and easy to do, just make sure to check up the seating surfaces and torque to proper specs.

I'm with Fiber... I always removed mine... when I had it.

Also, with the first gear clunk... you can usually turn down the idle a bit and it won't do that!

The slivers are probably pieces of starter ring gear. check for wear on the lead in side of the ring gear teeth next time you have the bike apart. Occasionally, it's a good idea to pull the primary cover because the way it is radiused on the bottom, there is some primary oil that won't drain out so you'll be contaminating your fresh oil.

Dogvet...that is why I always pulled the outer. Only an extra 30 mins to do it right!

BBD... yeah I found that out cause when I warm up my bike... I turn up the idle on the carb. If I don't turn it down enough... get the clunk. Get it right... no clunk.

Next time you have your primary cover off, check the upper rear engine to primary mounting bolt. I've got a bike on the lift right now and it has signs that the primary chain has been contacting it. I clearanced the upper hole so the bolt sits a little deeper and looks like I've got enough clearance.

maybe yours is doing the same thing. I'm sure it would make a noise, maybe at a higher idle the chain isn't whipping around as much....Your thoughts?
