I'm assuming it is a sending unit from the stator to VR but why has it backed out? I also can't push it all the way back in. What is the little set screw for between it and the inner primary?

That is the connection that caries the voltage and current to the voltage regulator. Have you looked inside of it? Are the terminals in it ok? Not burnt?

Guys I haven't done anything with this except tried to push it in and watch it work itself out a couple ribs. Guess I've been reluctant to pull it clear out. The set screw between it and the inner primary I was assuming it to be a "keeper" from it backing out but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe a keeper internally that has come off or broke?

The top part with the wires will disconnect from the part sticking out of the engine. This is the heart of you're charging system.

Use electrical contact cleaner spray. Clean the spade connectors and clean them up then reconnect it.

The screw is a "keeper" indeed....I am not at home so I cannot have a look at mine but all you have to do is loosen up (it might be already lose and that´s why it hasbacked out)that screw, get everything in place and tighten it again. Use some dielectric grease in those connectors to keep water and crap out of it.

Correct. My plug popped out it was 2003 Sturgis. We were on 14a when my 98 Lowrider just died. 2 guys pulled over. I could not figure out why the bike just went dead. One of the guys found the dangling plug. We replugged it in & zip tied it. Problem was since the plug was off the bike had been running off just the battery so it was now dead. These guys actually help PUSH start my HD. Took about 1/4 mile up hill then I had about 2 mile down hill for my motor to turn over & charge my battery. It finally caught about a 1/8 of a mile down that hill and fired up. 2 weeks later I bought my BDM chopper!

I've pushed started the rigid once on flat land in Hico Texas man that was a bitch. I've down an old shovel and those 88 CI motors are way easier to do then the 103! Haha.

I also have lost my clutch due to a loose hub nut out in west Texas that was fun! Got a running start and dropped into first then I had to have the GF hop on while I was riding in first gear.

Glad you got it sorted....

I park at the top of an incline whenever possible...like the second floor at work, never ground. Learned that lesson early Not a fun machine to push on your own should the need arise...
