Bike battery keeps going dead.

My battery keeps going dead and I have put a new battery in the bike and as long as I keep it on the trickle charger the bike runs fine and starts fine and everything works, but if I let it sit for a couple of days the battery will run low and sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't and one of the first indicators is the speedometer won't work and stays on 0 until I charge it then it is fine and works again. The only other thing is the lights on the tach flicker. Also if I ride it at around 60 MPH for a 100 miles or so when I try to start it the battery will be to weak to start. When I put a volt meter on the bike when it is running it shows 12.5 or so volts at 2000 RPM's so I don't think its the stator and the bike only has 8500 miles on it. The bike is a 2008 K-9 with a carb. I think I may have a dead short but have no idea where to look. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the dog pound.

If 12.5 is all you get at 2000 RPMs your battery is not getting charged while the bike is running. All of the charge in your battery is coming from the Trickle Charger. I would replace the stator. Check with Curtis at WSW a vendor on here. Wild Steed Worx & Services, When the road is your trail

Agree with all of the above. The bikes not charging. Bad Stator, voltage regular, lose wiring to the battery, stator plug not making a good connection, bad battery....

Sounds like a similar problem I was having....I changed the voltage regulator and all was good to go! I trouble shot the electrical with a voltage meter using tips here on the forum....good to go!
