sorry, I run Royal Purple synthetic. I change my oil every 3000 miles in my bikes even though Amsoil, Royal Purple, & Moble 1 say synthetics I can go 10,000 between oil changes. If I leave a little bit of old oil in the motor it's not the end of the world! by removing the drain plug you get 99% of the oil out and removing the oil tank line you get 99% of whats in the oil reservor. The amount left in the motor, sump & oil lines is not worth the risk of running a motor for 1 second not lubed. The risk out weigh the actions as a bad idea!

Don´t worry... there is no pressure with the filter off.... I rev it up to 2K rpm till it comes out the fresh oil... no mess.

running it with out the filter seams odd, but I guess if the filter is on the return side the motor is getting the fresh oil.

I use a scavenger that's sold on here by maddog. works great and very little mess. unscrew the filter screw the scavenger on and stick the supplied hose on it and stick in the drain pan. watch for clean oil and kill the motor. unscrew it and screw the filter on and start the bike. check for leaks and top off the tank as needed.

The motor always has oil..... you must fill up the oil tank first with fresh oil, obviously!!!

Running it without oil filter till the clean oil shows up just prevents the old oil going back into the tank to pollute the fresh oil.

well considering it holds > then 3 and < 4 quarts.

I would fill it, up to the normal amount, and then run till new oil is coming out the filter spot. your not going to run the tank dry pumpiung the sump and motor with fluid.

then install new filter, and top off till full.

A little bird told me this today:

" People are afraid of stripping out that plug, then they should NOT be working on their own bikes! Putting that plug in is no different than any of the other drain plugs. S&S along with Harley twin cam motors put a plug in the crank case for the very reason of using it. Otherwise they would not have put a plug there.

Think about it! That plug on the S&S engine also has a magnet on it. That should be removed at every oil change to not only drain the 3 oz of oil, but also to clean the magnet of any debris. This is a much safer practice than to run engine with oil filter off.

I've removed thousands of these plugs and have NEVER come close to cross threading them. Just use common sense and start the plug by hand before putting wrench to it. Also don't torque down to more than 90 in pounds. WOW!"

Good info, however if you would use 4 quarts or 128 oz to change your oil, 3 oz is a spit in the bucket or 2-1/2% of the oil, however, I only crank mine over I never start it. I change plugs every oil change or yearly anyway so their already out.:whoop::choppersmiley:
Now, lets talk about this little bird:roll:Bigdogtech01:2thumbs:

I'm not sure about taking the plug out at every oil change but if you forget to turn your fuel cock of at the end of the day and the fuel from your tank drains down to your motor because the float in your carb got stuck then I would certainly use that plug to drain the mess out of the motor.
Maybe this is the reason why the manufacturer put it there.

Paul.
