Speedometer error code

Im not sure if it is an error code coming up but looks like one.

I took the bike out for the first ride this weekend, and noticed that my speedometer was working, but the speed was way off (I was on the highway doing 15 it said). After about 20 min, it just stopped working all together. I rode the rest of the day without it working. We stopped to get gas (the bike had been running rough all day, figured it was old gas) and went to leave the station. I got on it a little and the bike just shut down. Called my buddy with a truck, brought it back to his house, turned out it was a loose ground cable to the coil. Fixed that, bike fired right now, but now, after the speedometer does its "test" sweep, it comes up with what looks like E 1446.0 Is there a list of error codes somewhere? Im wondering if the short in the ignition system some how shorted something out to the speedometer.

Any idea's?

There isn't any error codes for a 2000 model. Make sure that it is displaying an "E" and not a "t". A "t" would be the trip meter. I've been reading through the VDO instructions and there isn't any mention of error codes and I didn't recall any. It sounds like maybe you've lost the calibration number for your speedo.

If the speedo is indeed displaying a "t" and not an "E" then you probably just need to recalibrate your speedo. If your interested, I can provide a calibration procedure.

on my 07 Chopper, my speedo jumps around a lot at between 50 and 65 miles per hour almost all the time.. It rarely but sometimes doesn't work at all and then when it does that if I shut it down and restart the bike it works fine. Any ideas on that one? I pulled the speedo sensor and cleaned it and put it back but that didn't seem to change anything.
Thanks

When the speedo stops working, is the odometer still indicating or does it go blank?

DV, to the best of my knowledge it is still reading. just the speedo needle doesn't move. It's really strange because it will happen very rarely with no warning at all. It's happened maybe 6 or so times in the whole 9000 miles I've ridden it. It's one of the very few problems I have encounterd ( knock on wood) with my Dog since I bought it new.

that and the backfiring when it starts hot. Like after I get gas. I think that might be me because I sometimes can't stop myself from touching the throttle before hitting the run then start button. Old habits die hard.

I know that sometimes these speedos can be vibration sensitive which can make then act a bit funny from time to time. Ever had it tested or replaced?

no DV. I bought it new at Myrtle beach last year from Big Bikes of Jacksonville FL. and they never did a PDI download since they trailered it to the show before they could. Because I live so far from any BDM dealers it has never even had the initial downloads done. I do all the required maintanence myself and keep exact records of when and mileage and reciepts. I know I need to get this done and I was hoping I could get it done at Myrtle beach this year at the Big Dog truck at Hooters. I also need to get the strut bolt recall done.

it may very well be a "t" not an "e" and would make since if its the trip and its not changing either, seeing as the speedometer is not woking at all. If you could get me the calibration procedure, that would help me out a lot.

My Speedo Failed Today ...in a unique way ? The bike now has about 1500miles and while riding the needle just pegged or so I though... the miles readout went blank ,the tach still works and so do all of the lights Oil /netu/etc then after a hour or so the needle went even farther it now reads about 160mph LOL I even removed battary cable , nothing resets it ? I guess I have a good excuse to FLY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Speedo/odo quit working

My speedometer stopped working while on a ride. It went to 0, and the odometer is frozen too. Tach works, reset worked to set trip distance back to zero but doesn't add any more miles. On initial powerup, the speedo does it's self test(seems ok like it always did). When I shut off the motorcycle, the speedo shows 1430 momentarily, then goes back to 0. 05 ridgeback. Original white faced speedo. Thanks.

Hey BigJim, I kinda lost track of this thread, I'll see if I can get that calibration procedure posted!

FYI Folks,
the tachometer and speedometer are separate units in a common housing. You can loose one and the other will still work!

Ok Dogvet I noticed you asked if the tach was still working without the speedo and the odo thats where I'm at. Just a bad speedo I'm thinkin ? And how long before the ecm shuts me down alltogether

Thanks that fixed that problem. It had switched to klm instead of mph. Now I need to know why my Tach does not work after I eliminated the EHC.
