:2thumbs: Bloody good idea! :2thumbs:

I have to add that I would be inserting the rope three quarters up the compression stroke or there abouts - jus my thoughts.

I have s&s boxes on my motor but Thank You Very Much Danny for shearing this trick with us!!!

Paul.

Well......ACTUALLY ANDREW BARNES...(Beast is REALLY Andrews new ALIAS for those who don't know)............There is another way also......
Check this out!!!!!!! This was taught to me by GM Senior Master Engine Guru who worked at the General Motor's HI-Performance Clinic's I use to go to.....Very Smart man.....

First remove the spark plug for the cylinder your working on
2nd....get a couple feet of soft 1/4 rope and insert it threw the spark plug hole, about a foot of rope in the cylinder will work....
3rd...Rotate engine around until piston starts to come up on TDC....The rope will push up against the valves and hold them in place
4th....remove spring, retainer and locks from valve, get a Dial Indicator base mount and mount it securely, insert your dial indicator in mount..... Zero it out and wiggle valve back and forth and measure the amount of slop you have in your guide......

Don't have to dis-assemble your engine at all......old school trick that works great HOOO--YAAAHHH....:2thumbs::2thumbs:

I do prolly over a hundred sets of heads each year, and every set of S&S heads that comes through my doors wearing TP boxes are ALWAYS in poor shape guide wise. It is what it is.
There is camp fix-it before it breaks and there is camp fix it when-it-breaks. I've heard the suggestions. Are we talking guide wear and geometry?

1. Upon lift I coast down a hill, turn around and gas it. Do I see smoke? No.
2. Does my bike start right up all the time no problem and no smoke? None.
3. All I have is a 40 dollar gasket leak.

Take it for what it's worth. No and None mean John is in a holding pattern if no smoke is involved.

Upon Lift = I am pulling oil from the guide; into the chamber; hangs there; no pressure out the pipe.

Upon Cold Start = I am an open valve; I drip down the guide from the last ride; down the valve stem; off the valve; onto the piston waiting to burn upon an [overnight] sit; and now start it up.

Thanks Sven, that makes all the sense in the world to me. I will definitely perform these checks and see what's going on before releasing funds I can use elsewhere in life.

Thanks for posting this.

Are TP rocker boxes not available? If you think S&S are that ugly why not stay with TP ? Just askin'.....

As John stated earlier the TP are designed for Harley valve heights, not S&S. This leads to misalignment which is what is leading to so many failures

My 2 cents, I went to full S&S a few years ago. Had some serious misalignment issues with the TPs, causing valve guide wear. Pulled heads sent to John Sachs for head work, did the install myself. Still running great & strong. My opinion, TPs are time bomb waiting to happen and it will cost alot more if you wait for failure.

NO WAY will I put rope inside my engine. I asked 9 Master gm techs and they said hell no. I also asked 1 World Class GM tech which is above any "Master Tech" and he laughed at me. But its your property do what you want. just my .02

that's your problem Al...you talked to fucking Technicians:loony:,not A professional mechanic,BIG DIFFERENCE between the two:lol:,and 2nd I never said that was the ONLY way to check guide clearance,it was just a Trick taught to me by a GM Triple Senior Master certified Engine guru.........3rd.......I worked at a GM Dealership for 13 years, WTF is a World Class tech????:confused: I never heard of that one....and last how could you possibly cause engine damage by compressing soft cotton rope against the face of the valve:confused::confused:???? All your doing is compressing the soft rope against the face of the valve to get a measurement, then rotate engine back and remove rope safely.....I have done this a couple of times on small engines, worked fine for me.....

Your just making shit up now. there is no such thing as a Triple senior master certified engine guru. If you dont know what a World Class GM Technician is GOOGLE IT. Then goodle Triple sr. etc.... not found.

I am a Service Manager at a GMC facility right now!

GM doesnt even call them Mechanics. They are Technicians!

Like I said its your property. You have your opinion as I do. I never got rude with you as you did me.

Someone blow this pic up please to educate who questions me.

triple seniore master. that is just to funny.

each bike owner with this issue can make their own decision.

I truly dont know why you would attack my opinion when I wasnt rude to you

Thanks for the info. No rope for me. You can just put air to it and be 100% sure valves are seated all the way up. there is room for error with a clothes line , shoe string etc...

Im glad you cleared it up on a world class tecnician. I dont know any dealership that calls them Mecanics?
Mecanics are at mom and pop places so he is correct there is a big differance mecanics are not traines as well as a Technician.
