Hello BigDog lovers, I have a 2007 K9. Today I went to start her and the speedo doesn't light up or sweep and the horn blows. I noticed the pc linked light will not light. I tested the battery, disconnected it for 5min checked the pc connections. Tried a jump box, no change. Am I looking at a pc ( HCU ) Thanks and ride Hard !!

generally, what you are describing is signaling a very low battery. especially the speedo sweep and the horn blowing. recommend pulling the battery and getting it load tested.

This just happened to me when I came back from bike week in mid Octorber, Bike started and ran flawless in Daytona, loaded it up and came home. When I unloaded the bike from the trailer and turned the key on, all I got was 1 flash of the right turn signal, I tried it 6-8 times and sometimes the turn signal would flash sometimes not. So I thought dead battery, tried to jump and nothing. If I jiggled the key, sometimes I could see the turn signal flash. So I thought key switch needs replaced. Pushed it in the garage and parked it. 3 hrs later I came out in the garage to go somewhere and I thought I would try the key, guess what, everything worked and it fired right up, HMMMM.
I since have replaced the key switch anyway, and I haven't experienced it again, YET.:willy_nilly:

Update after having the battery tested 5 times using 5 different testing devices. All passed the battery , including one that rated the 310cca batery at 431cca . I jumped the starter solenoid to eliminate the EHU. I had the same result so at that point I knew I had a battery or a starter drawing to many amps. I took battery out had it tested at O'Reillys auto parts it tested good there. Bought one anyway the bike is fine. I tried it 6 times so far. Boy I could use a good explanation. Thanks for all the tips.

Batteries don't draw current they supply current.

It's likely there was a poor battery cable connection. The battery terminals and cable ends need to be brushed clean with a copper wire brush. The largest wires go onto the battery post first then the smaller ones. Any new battery should be fully charged before putting it into service.

I had 2 batteries, 1 was 2 years older, they were both load tested at Battery's Plus and both load tested to the same Amperage. Only one would start the bike, go figure.
I'm going on 3 years with current battery, always on tender and I always carry my XP-3 for insurance. That has helped a few bikers out already but I haven't had to use it myself.:2thumbs:

If the bike shuts down while riding and then you can start it back up is a good indication that there is an intermittent electrical connection problem.

Check, clean and apply dielectric grease to the EHC connectors and others. Connector CRIMPS at the battery posts. EXTRA CLEAN battery posts. Keyswitch wearing out. Headlight connector melted and shorting out.

Search the forum for other tips.

I got lucky enough today to get on the phone with Jason at Kansas Motorcycle works. He is a certified master tech from Big Dog Company and knows the product inside out. He knew just by all the details I gave him about my problem what was wrong down to the resistor inside the HHU.After a lengthy conversation I ordered the EHC R.I.P. replacement kit. I will keep you posted. Kansas Motorcycle works .com 1 316 260 8039 Jason or Matt

I installed the EHC replacement kit from Kansas motorcycle works. It was very easy and well made. All the connectors were labeled and fit perfectly. My only suggestion to them was to include in the instructions for notching out the battery box for the harness. The bike has been flawless ever since.
