Franco will be along shortly....

Drain your primary and take your outer primary cover off....sounds like your clutch hub nut came loose/off.

From your vague description I would say check your shift linkage to see if it's in neutral and the link ends aren't broke or the arm on the trans is moving. The trans is in gear if you can't start it without pulling in the clutch so either your linkage is bad or your trans is stuck in gear and the arm on the trans is not moving the trans shaft. The nut on the trans arm could have come lose and the arm isn't moving the trans to change gears.

"and if u put it in gear and try to start it With the cluch not held the bike takes off"

Duh..... of course it will it's in gear??? Am I missing something??

Franko is just going to ask you to post on the intro thread...

The starter free spins like it will turn but not catch and start the bike but if u release the cluch in gear the bike will take off sounding like an electronic motorcycle but not turning the engine over I don't get it

I'm really sorry bro but after 50 years of riding and building you have me baffled. I think you need a priest, bible and a chicken.... If you figure it out please let me know...

"The starter free spins like it will turn but not catch and start the bike " that sounds like your jackshaft.

"but if u release the cluch in gear the bike will take off sounding like an electronic motorcycle but not turning the engine over I don't get it" What do you mean by "take off?" Does it move forward?

Take the primary cover off and you should be able to find the problem!
Of course drain the primary oil first.

Did you get any slack in your clutch lever? If so, chances are your clutch hub nut has become loose or you might have snapped your main input shaft...

Ya, but he says it's not turning the engine over which means the clutch isn't connecting with the motor. He said if you try to start it in gear with the clutch not pulled in the bike will move forward which means the clutch and trans are working. He also says in neutral when you try to start it it spins like crazy but the motor doesn't turn again, which sounds like the motor isn't connected to the trans.

Right, that's why I asked if he lost any clutch lever. I had a customers K-9 do the same thing and the main shaft was busted...

pull your primary!!!!! the ghost will reveal itself, broken chain? engine sprocket? if your starter will move your bike in gear but not turn over the engine you have a problem between clutch and engine

I've been saying the same thing. Do the BD's have the chuck key in the engine sprocket? If so he could have sheared that off.

Glad you found the problem but good luck with getting the parts through BD. They went out of business. For $1,400 I'd buy a complete belt drive. And $1380 for a clutch hub and labor is a rip off...
