Up in smoke!

So after a couple of years the M-unit gave up and self destructed while starting. The starter would not disengage after the motor started. I assume the circuit failed in a closed position and the current destroyed the box via short circuit. The box bellowed smoke and the erupted n to flames. Bike sits in Winchester Va. awaiting the insurance adjuster. The question now is...what should I use as a controller for the functions. ..??? and who to do the repairs as the bike is an hour away from me. Ideas?
For anyone looking at the same situation. ...do not use the Moto unit as it appears the DC current requirements cannot be met or sustained by this unit.
Stay tuned for more!

The venders should chime in. They are not about to sell junk and be called out on it. So I would assume a vendor has what you need. That still does not stop that starter from doing the same thing.

Lets think what was the last thing we did to the bike? Did we move the starter/primary/found it loose and tightened things up? So the odds are, who is to blame? The stuck relay or a stuck/kinked gear to gear so it won't retract (the assumed job at the pri/starter/electrics with relay?

See the variables of that stuck starter?

Could have been the starter contributing to the issue, but I doubt it. The M unit has been showing different symptoms that lead me to believe it was the root cause of the issue. But yes, the starter could have been part of the issue.

BTW....no work or mods have been done in 18 months or so. The configuration of the system has not changed.

You mentioned the M unit showed "different systems" before it went up in smoke? Sounds similar to when the EHC would be going out. Hmmm

Tell us about the different symptoms...........

At first it would shut down and come back with a power recycle then later it would just lose power while riding and backfire over and over....then be fine. I think the heat is what did it in to be honest

Yours lasted a hell of a lot longer than mine! I still loved it while it worked.

Next attempt for me will be the Thunderheart EHC. This winter...

My .02 cents

My .02 cents

I had my old biker Mechanic do a complete rewire job on my 04 Dog and LOVE IT.
New Bars, HD Controls, and now 3 fuses. I trust my bike 100% now. Only thing lacking is a Speedometer (But who cares how far you go or how fast)
 Just looking for the right speedometer that fit my clean bars
If you want his # maybe he can talk to your mechanic and tell him everything he did.

Did you get it back home? Sorry I missed this for Winchester is just down the road. Unfortunately by the time I saw this I had headed north towards Phili to get to my project.
Got this happening in a couple of days....gonna be a throw down!

Smart man. Simple wiring, simple switches. No smoke, no mirrors.

Now you can ride and not worry about getting home.

no I have Mirrors still :roll:

But yes he made it really reliable and simple.

Best money spent

I do need to post some pictures of it and I bet I could sell or get rid of all the items taken off the bike and that would lower the cost of what I spent but I am just happy its 100%

Did you get my PM GDOG Pitbull?
