My painter pointed this out to me also and it was too close for me so I put a thicker o-ring on mine and it does keep the cap away from the paint and also I cam see a small gap between the savor and cap

Thicker o-ring between the cap and the savor, or the savor and the cap?

(BB... Bad ass cap btw ;-)

Its the same thing, you just rearranged the words, but to answer your question, I put a bigger o-ring on the cap. There is a rubber gasket that comes with the paint saver also. Picture above is the paint saver and Mr Wright's polished SS extension thats held on by the saver and the custom cap made by that other guy:lol::2thumbs:

Nice cap by the way,:2thumbs:

LamboV12 once mentioned to me that he used the plug at the rear of the tank as "extra venting".... has anyone else done this? Does it work? I'd be interested to see that set up.

Bringing my bike home from buying it I stopped for gas. Couldn't get the cap off for nothing. Down the block there was a Walmart where I sent the wife to get a jar/lid remover. Broke the lid remover but finally got the cap off.

Went home and took off the "paint saver" and threw it in the trash. Put a regular vented cap on and have had no problems since. A good quality cap with 2 rubber gaskets works real well.

One word of caution, if you take the paint saver off stuff a rag down the hole first because the silicone pices will fall in the tank. Ask me how I know...
What cap did you go with Bill?.....Pics?

Could be that the paint your painter sprayed on has not fully cured trapping solvents. Was the paint baked on or air dry? Waxing to soon will trap solvents in the paint and cause blistering

Here is a pic:

Looks like it belongs there and using 2 gaskets it doesn't leak. You just push down on the center and turn a 1/4 turn and the center pops up so you can turn it.

I have an aircraft style one laying around that I used until I got this one but it was so heavy it would spin when going down the road. Any vented cap will work but make sure the threads are alum and it comes with good gaskets.

When I pulled my paint saver it was installed wrong the gasket was kinked and leaked from day one. When I re installed it with the polished aluminum ring I made I installed a new gasket plus an O-ring and silicone. All is good so far plus my new one off cap!:2thumbs:

Bill... looks good. Do you know how it vents? The stock cap has the two holes in the grey plastic part center, and it vents out the side of the top of the grey part. The landmark I put on vents the same way, but the hole is a lot smaller now that I look at it. The thing that worries me about the harley pop-up is if it sits flush agains the tank, it could choke off venting like the landmark.

My painter pointed out that it is better to run without the paint saver in case you do have bubbling. You can keep an eye on it, & catch the problem earlier..thus requiring far less repair work. He's going to have to repaint a huge area on my tank in order to make it right. Hopefully he can match that candy orange. He's not sure about it. If I had not had the paint saver, and the bubbling was caught closer to the edge of the gas inlet, then he would have been able to spot repair it. Not to mention... it would have cost me much less to fix it.

I've run the popup over 2000 miles and no problems except it needs to be closed to vent. Just push down and turn 1/2 tun either way and it's closed or open. It fits snug against the tank but has the larger rubber gasket under it and a smaller gasket that covers the edge of the gas fill.

I'm sure there are better fancier gas caps out there and I really like BDchoppers but this one is simple and doesn't distract from the lines of the tank.

For my cruiser I bought (and can't find where now) a small jar of epoxy clear that came with the hardener in a separate tube. I used a small brush to cover about 1" around the gas fill and it kept the paint from peeling. I'm looking for it now for the dog...

Found this but it's spray:

Yeah... My painter said that be will use something similar on mine... Sounds like a good idea. I'm searching for the best vented cap option without a saver now... Might go with the pop up, but also looking at one from Speed Dealer customs

So, lambov12 (Frank) tells me that the stock HD cap won't fit without the paint saver on an 08 k9. Does anyone know if I can get a vented cap to use on an 08 k9 without using the stock paint saver?

Stock Harley works on my '06 Mastiff without the paintsaver.
