Hey Big Dog Forum,
I want to post this to a forum to share my experience owning a Big Dog and want to hear your experience owning a Big Dog.

I own 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback, had this bike for about 3 years now. I absolutely fell in love with the design of a Big Dog and Bourget choppers after seeing one at the bike show. A wide 330 tire and 9 ft. frame w/ extended fork is an attention catcher; bike turns heads everywhere I go. Sometimes it’s even too much attention. People want to take pictures with it; tourists snap photos every time I ride this beast downtown @ magnificent mile. Loud Vance & Hines 2-1 exhaust announces arrival better than any siren. To me bike looks absolutely stunning.

To keep Ridgeback at its best, I baby the bike, and meticulously maintain it to keep it in the finest possible condition. Chrome is polished, and cleaned. Paint has fresh coat of wax protectant. I keep maintenance religiously up to date, oil change once a year etc... Looking back over 15 years of owning and riding motorcycles, I haven't spent and dedicated so much attention to any of my earlier bikes. Today bike runs perfectly as a fine machine.

On the other hand, over 3 years of ownership, I had quite a few issues with the bike. In 2013 transmission went bad, could not get it in neutral or into high gear. Over the term of a year, had 3 different professional mechanics to repair it. After nearly 1k spends between mechanics in labor and part, I finally had transmission removed and send to manufacturer - Baker Drivetrain. Total rebuild w/ installation came out to be 2K. Overall 3K spends on transmission. In 2012 break cables went bad, replaced front, rear and acceleration cables. In 2013, rear brakes misaligned causing a pads and disks to overheat. Replaced front/rear pads. Same year, after inspection mechanic located 2 engine mount bolts missing. Small things keep falling apart such as two suction cups for rider seat fell off. Passenger peg support bracket tends to become loose after few hundred miles. Battery went bad, replaced. Today a speedometer plastic reset button fell off. Many other things I had to fix, tune-up, adjust and replace over the years. Thanks God (knocking on a wood) S&S engine still running w/ no issues. Overall I feel like bike is falling apart and I am constantly on the lookout if anything else will break.

A Big Dog is not a cheap toy considering a price tag of 25K+, bike looks amazing, but mechanically it feels to be such a shitty designed machine. It’s a motorcycle that I want to keep in the garage just to look at, and not to ride it. I am tired and frustrated of constantly fixing it and waiting what else will fall off the bike or will break.

Yesterday I went to Honda dealer, and test rode Goldwing F6B model. Honestly guys, as much as I love Big Dog, I really enjoyed a ride on F6B. I realize there is no comparison to Ridgeback, but it was a pleasant test ride. Comfortable ride, powerful engine and its reliable. But its not an attention catcher, and no wow factor with F6B.

It feels like a crazy love affair, I love the Big Dog bikes, but hate the fact there is always something to fix.

What is your experience with Big Dog bikes? Love it or hate it?

One of the old ones.
I think you'll find most love their Dogs.....
And part of it is the challenge of keeping on top of the thing and keeping it sweet. In Zen and the Art, Pirsig explores the differences between folks who just like to ride and 'get in the groove', and those who also love the mechanics of the machine and understanding how and why it works. I am as much 'in the zone' cleaning Loctite out of bolt holes with a tap so the torque will be true as I am laying that K9 into those sweepers on Hwy 7 south of Harrison Arkansas.
I think the happiest BDM owners are in the latter group. There is a profound sense of satisfaction when the bike has been repaired and stands ready for service by your own hand. And this forum is invaluable for resources.
To finally answer your Q: I will keep that bike on the road until I can't ride anymore.

I love my 2006 Mastiff, sure I have had some issues but none that I couldn't handle myself. I never have anyone work on my Dog, I do all my engine work and maintenance. Machine work I did send out being that I don't have the equipment machine heads and so on.

As for the Tranny I bought a used one for $150 from a guy who was parting our his wrecked 2006 Mastiff. I jumped on that right away and sent it to Andrew a member on this board and he did a compete rebuild on it for $385.00, I had to pay for the replacement of upgrading the shaft but well worth it.

Andrew had been advertising on here for at least 2 years so I guess you missed out on that, he could have saved 3K on transmission work. Don't be shy, if you have any questions about an issue with you bike post on here and someone will help you out, that is what we enjoy doing on here helping each out with parts or and knowledge. I think I have given away more parts than some have ever bought for their bikes, but that is me. I like to help out when I can, especially if the part is just sitting around collecting dust and rust I just let it go to a good home. :2thumbs:

Sorry you had to spend so much to keep her going, but I guess labor is what kills most people.

Good Luck and Ride Safe,

Carlos :whoop:

I noticed you have been a member since July of 2010 and have only posted 51 times over those four years. There are hundreds of threads on this forum that over those four years could have saved you thousands of dollars. There are mechanics and vendors who are members here that specialize in providing parts and services to help us all keep our bikes on the road. I have dealt with several of them and have no issues with them.

One question I have is if you are so proud of your bike why did you not post a few pics of it?

If you do decide to buy the honda list your bike on the forum. There are plenty of guys on here looking for one. Good luck and ride safely.

I won't be selling mine any time soon.

Looking forward to retirement
My 03 chopper always gets petted once a week. And yes it is like any high proformance hot rod! You will wrench on it weekly and ride it weekly!! I love my chopper! And yes I love my 96 HD Ultra I did the complete rebuild on, but they are two different bikes. And yes the HD requires petting just like the bigdog. As for a Gold wing? You need to call my neighbor !!! His is 1.5 yrs old and has been in the shop 6 times. The last time they think they fixed the problem finally, THEY REWIRED THE ENTIRE BIKE!!!!!

Really glad to hear your opinions on the bikes and its maintenance. Seem that we can agree that of us spend a lot of time just keeping our bikes up and running at its best condition. I posted few pictures of my ride. The forum is great, I did miss quite a few posts from DYI section, perhaps it would save me some cash on repairs over they years.

Owning a big dog is deff different than owning any other bike,if you don't do your reasearch and are not a wrench monkey ,you are better off getting a Honda with a full warrant,I find it challenging owning a big dog but also very rewarding and have learned a lot from this and other forums to keep my dog running like a Swiss watch and have no complaints but understand your frustration ,ultimately its all about how much time and effort you have to invest to make sure your dog is in tip top shape

I have had my ole scooter a few years now. I have done quite a few things to it including spending about 3 months as time allowed rubbing my finger prints off with billet polish a little at a time. Brakes , Speedo, wire plus, wolf headlight, and then wire plus fried as well out of warranty, new tires , recovered seat gel pad installed, constantly tightening and wipeing/polishing off. I avoid the rain like the plague. It is not nor did it come out perfect after it had been neglected sitting in the weather. I can think of no other scooter I had rather ride bar none. Short story that kind says how
I feel about the ole scoot.
This happened last week on the 4th. I ride as I can with the Patriot Guard. We did an escort and flag line on the 4th for a family where the grand-father who had served in the navy pasted on. An about 40 miles escort there were about 30 other bikes present. After the flag line and service as everyone was leaving I eased up and spoke to the family as I was leaving. As I was about to leave one of the grandson's maybe 10 years old stepped around his father and said(says it all/ his eyes were bugged out  ) "Daddy he is riding a real chopper!" You know I had to shack this young man's hand ! All that wrenching and polishing and wrenching and polishing was worth it. Maybe it took his mind off the situation his family was facing at the moment.

We all enjoy these ole scoots,, keep on doing what you are doing!

I have 2 100hp custom choppers, 1 is a k-9 the other is a BMC 918ST

I've had my fair share of issues with both bikes (belts motors ehc ignition mod, broken, lost bolts)

But as with most here I wouldn't trade my K-9 for anything else out there. To the point that when my 08 K9 was totalled last year by a stupid bitch not paying attention and parking on it, I searched and replaced it with a near identical 08 K9 (clightly different paint scheme.)

I had 56K miles on my 08 when it was killed.
I'll keep this one going till I drop if possible.

It's just like a woman.

It doesn't matter how beautiful she is, somewhere there is a man that is tired of putting up with her crap. :D

I'm on my 2nd 03 Chopper. I have probably worked on it about as much as I have rode it and I have a LOT of parts on the workbench waiting to get installed. But I really enjoy turning wrenches and learning.

I am looking forward to the day when my "upgrades" are done and I can ride more then wrench. I do understand how you feel, but I still say keeping the Dog is a hands down winner!
