Custom sissybar for $100

I thought I'd post this to all the guys who like me won't spend $600 on a sissybar. I got this one off Ebay for $100 it's NOS and had a 12" spread at the mounting holes and flat with 2 mounting holes.

I just took out the signal lights and got 1/2 inch longer bolts put them through, added a custom spacer and put the lights back on. I then positioned the bar and drilled a hole into the fender and inserted a custom made spacer that goes all the way through the fender. It's real sturdy and I have a perfect old school pad coming this week that will fit the whole bar. Mamma's happy!

Im with you man! $600 for a sissy bar is freakin crazy!! I was fortunate enough to have some good tools and machines around so I made my bar and mounts for about $40.

Wow! Nice job! Back in the late 60's when I had a chopper shop I'd spend most of my time making parts because there were no custom parts around. Now I don't have the tools to do it.

You did a heck of a job and looks better than most. Maybe you should start makung the alum mounts to sell. I'd buy a pair.

Thanks guys sorry didn't want to jack Bill's thread!

Just always get more satisfaction in making stuff yourself even tho it may not be absolutely perfect you didn't just buy it or pay someone to do it for you! I LOVE to work on my own stuff and I was very proud of the way this came out. I literally had 2 days in labor and less then a $50 in materials to make this! The mounts where made out of aluminum and the sissy bar its self was from stainless steel rod I bought off of ebay for less then $30 shipped. I saw this same sissy bar at Ginz and they wanted $495 bucks for it so I decided to make it my self.

Just goes to show you if you put your mind to it you can do it yourself!!

Once again good job Bill and hope you continue to do your own stuff when you can!

The mounts where easier to make then you think. I just cut 2 pieces of stock aluminum 2"x1" and then drilled the main hole at a 20degree angle to get the sissy bar angle back right. Then drilled 2 holes for the mounting screws and counter sank them so they would sit flush when tightened up. Then I just used a mill to clean the corners up and put a nice shape on them then hit the polish wheel to finish them off. Took me all of about 4 hours only cause I measure 4X and drill and cut once..........lol.

The main sissy bar I actually made a full size pattern out of cardboard in order to get the height and width correct! I then measured the length of the bars then ran them on the lathe to get the points right. Then made a little jig to bend the 2 bars by hand to mirror each other then weld the 3 bars together.

It could not have came out any better!! It fit so snug that I didn't even have put a set screw in to keep the bar from slipping out. Really not hard to do at all.

Great job Hollywood. I love how the sissy bars look on choppers. I won't take mine off for any reason except for repair reasons.

I've put off doing this because it scares me to death to drill the hole in the fender. Did you have any problems with the fiberglass cracking?

No, I placed a thin 1" round washer inside of the fender. I was worried too but after 800 or so miles with the wife on the back it's fine. I also built a custom pad for it full length. The glass is pretty thick and seems to hold up well.
