Found wierd little spring trapped in oil filter - help identify??

Did you ever find the origin of the small spring? If it was from a seal, there's probably 2 to 3" more laying in there some where.
I know it is not from the old toasted cam seal, it was fried but the spring was still intact and covered by rubber. the only place it could have come from would have been the old TP oil pump, and it was left inside the motor.

That doesn't look like a spring to me. It reminds me of a metal chip from a lathe. Is it possible when the washer grenaded that a sharp edge made a spiral metal chip? If you pull it apart does it spring back or stay stretched?
Definitely a spring, soft / bendy and springs back. the TP oil pump had those tiny springs on check valves inside of it, and the lower port check valve apparently came apart while the mechanic was inspecting it. obviously he did not look to find the spring, let's hope the tiny ball bearing did not end up inside the motor either.

I concur. Like I said, you've got someone who could not find a pump spring? Assembles the engine anyway? What spring is in there now? You've got a case there, LA Dog.

Sven- this spring was super tiny, it is not your normal spring like for the SS pumps (big springs for check valve and pressure regulator valve). Ya I agree the shop did me wrong. I just verified today that they used too large of a spacer on the cam, and it was set to... minus .001 of clearance!! less than zero end play... so that is why it fried. and they left a white pinion gear in there with the red gear cam, so the cam was way loose / getting pressed downward on the nose bushing. :spank: :bang:

I installed a new red pinion as well as a new torrington inner bearing.

Without a coin next to it like one suggested... Are we back to square one? If we are talking about spring with cup and spring with ball, are they not about an inch or more long?

No this is some kind of proprietary spring found inside the TP oil pumps (and I guess the Revtech pumps) on the upper and lower oil output ports, inside the pump body. the spring is literally 3/16" wide by 1/4" long, if not slightly smaller. The SS pumps don't use that type of odd setup.
