Starter issue? Any ideas?

I would like to start by saying thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

My issue is this, When I hit the starter button the engine will turn over for a second then nothing. Rhump...click...nothing but the hazard lights. It does not do this every time but more often than not lately. it will do it after long rides, short runs, cold in the garage, hot days, cooler days. For instance I installed the battery today after I had it load tested and it fired off like normal. I let it run for about 30 seconds and tried it again and rhump...click...nada! I disconnected the battery to simulate another "reset" and reinstalled...nada.

My trouble shooting thus far is as follows.

Battery: Load tested 13.1v 365cca, Thickest wire installed closest to battery terminal. Connections tight.

Compression reliefs: They both cycle while doing the above mentioned process. I removed the small green wire from starter and checked them repeatedly and both seem to cycle/engage normally.

Cylinders: I can remove the rear plug only and the engine will turn over like normal, remove the front plug only and same result as above.

Starter: Checked the ground cable and it is intact and clean. No signs of oil leaking ( exterior visual inspection ), connections are tight.

My gut is leaning at the starter or related wiring but with the open cylinder chamber on the rear jug it turns over like normal. I though about a possible weak ground under load and added a ground cable from the battery to the frame, this did nothing. It feels like it always turns over just enough until the piston is near the top of the stroke and compression is built up and it just stops.

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

Thanks,
Mike

Hold the rear compression release down by hand and see if it turns over.

Once it starts does the bike run/drive normally?
Have you checked the compression on the cylinders?

I have tried holding the compression reliefs while attempting the start it. still just a rhump....

I have not tested compression, I will test tomorrow. Do you know what is should be?

Once started bike runs great, no issues at all. Just afraid to stop for a cold one as I may be stranded.

Do you have a Slam Button on your stater. If not I would get one and try starting it by way of the Slam Button. If it works then I would say there could be a problem with you control PC Board, or some connector (ignition switch, Ignition Module, EHC, including the compression releases) not making contact all the time. If your bike has the Wire Plus it could be the module that controls the hand controls. Take you time and check all connectors. I would also look for wires that the insulation may be gone and touching metal on wire to wire. Try doing a search to see if others have had a simular issue and what the fix was.

I forgot in my original post, the ehc lights are what I believe to be normal. Controller and power lights on when I turn the key. I noticed last night when I turn the key on the ignition light on the ech pulses very faint, would have never noticed except it was dark. It comes on like normal when I hit the run switch.

That's a Chinese battery. They don't last
Your bike Hazards are coming on because the EHC is telling you the battery does not have enough juice to do what the system needs.
Buy a US made battery like Deka and you won't have these issues.

I would pull ehc connectors clean and repack with dielectric grease your ing light should be on not faintly blinking if that doesn't cure it I would check for any loose splices in your wiring . let us know how it goes

X2 - To clarify a little if I may, the EHC is telling you the battery voltage is dropping too much. You do need a better battery like Curtis says. Remember one important fact.....Curtis is always right.:2thumbs:

Test the battery by hooking up a jump start or to your car battery, (CAR NOT RUNNING) and try to start, if it cranks, then you know you battery don't have the balls anymore. I take mine off the battery tender, and try to start and it hesitates and grunts and turns over very slowly and then it starts. I run it for awhile and the system charges it up. The battery is 2yrs old and always on a tender, but being a AGM battery I always wonder how long did it sit on the shelf before I bought it.
I feel much better having a jump start in my bag if it would fail me when I'm out, and I know its going to sooner or later.
Buy an Antigravity jump start (XP_3) from Curtis and take with you for insurance, I just bought 6 of them from him and everyone loves them.:2thumbs:

Hey Nuke,
Don't be pumping up Curtis too much, he's liable to think he's all that and a bag of chips, and we will start getting parts shipped to us in 4-5 days instead of 2-3. Lets keep him on his toes.:whoop:

I am going to purchase a battery today, the one i have does say made in usa right on the front. I have several friends who run the same battery with no issues. I am willing to try anything at this point.

If you are sure your battery tests good, you may also check for bare wires hitting the frame and robbing your juice. That's happened to me in my headlight wiring.

Put clips on the battery and start wiggling wires looking for a voltage drop.

Can you post a pic of the battery?
Every look up I had on that battery, as you listed it, states it is made in China.

Update:................For Sale; 1 highly questionable 5 month old American made battery!.

Slapped new battery and did everything I know to make it NOT start, but fell short on my mission. I hope I am not celebrating to soon but everything seems to be normal again. The ignition light still pulses very faintly when I turn the key to the on position though ( not sure if this is normal or not ). I will run it thorough the gauntlet again tomorrow and see if there are any changes.

Curtis, I have to be honest, I did not think it would make a difference. So far I couldn't have been more wrong. I will keep you posted. Thank you.

All, thanks to you as well for the input, I am still going to take all the preventive measures recommended.

My first question before I make a statement here is "Have you tested your charging system to make sure it is charging correctly. The charging system can play havoc with a battery if it is not functioning correctly.
With that said:
So it clearly is made in the USA.
Of course I have no knowledge of your ride either other than what you have told us but based on what you have said and the behavior of the bikes electrical system I am suspect of the battery.

As a comparison though and I am in no way trying to sell you on Deka it is just an example

Xtreme X2-20L
Capacity: 17.5AH CCA: 310

Deka ETX-16L
Capacity: 19AH CCA: 325

That's good news but again if it were my ride I would do a thorough check of the charging system as it is possible something is wrong and your new battery may suffer the same fate.
