117 S&S stopped, Chain derailing sound

I was on a 10 mile ride, two up decelerating up to a stop and the motor stopped (but didn't seize) with a sound like a chain derailing on the right side of the motor (didn't sound like the primary). Attempted turn over with starter and it turned over with same chain derail noise. Not a knock. Put it in gear and rocked back and forth. No noise, good compression. Any ideas where to start?

Pull the primary cover and c.heck your clutch Basket nut. Also the chain adjuster could have come loose. You have a manual?

Andy, sorry to read about your bike. I am not an S&S mechanic by any means but I would open the inspection cover on the primary.What the hell it's easy and cheap and what could it hurt. Good luck.

Maybe there should be an intro in the registration process.

Only allowed to post in the intro section for your first post, or have them enter the info, then create the intro for them.


I still think it is disrespectful, especially if they start with a rant, for the first post not to be an intro.

definitely agree with that. not nice to come in and shit in our sandbox. guess the intro police kinda gets balanced out with good and bad. was just thinking out loud.:up:

Intro or not, this site was created to talk big dogs and help people right?

He said right side, not left, so we can assume not the primary if that's the case right? But, noise can travel and what may seem like right, might actually be transmitting over from the left side.
However, if the motor is still turning over, and just not starting, it sounds like the problem is coming from the pinion area. After seeing what happened with Dragan's motor, I would be checking the Pinion gear nut for sure. While you are in there, you can check the lifters as well.
But before you take anything apart, try to pinpoint the noise a little better so you are not wasting time and money, taking things apart that you didn't need to.

When I joined back in 2010 I was fumbling around trying to find out what I could about our bikes and really didn't know the protocol about the "intro" thing. Thankfully, the guys pointed me in the right direction and didn't beat to hard on me. This is my first forum and thankfully, for once, I got it right the first time:cheers:

I was just making good fun with Andrew... he is my friend and also in May he is coming over to my place in Spain to do my Trans and other bits & pieces...

About the OP´s problem, we dont have much information to be able to diagnose with, do we?

I had something like that happen to me not too long ago.. My primary chain tensioner (shoe) screw came loose and fell into my primary chain making one hell of a racket, the the bolt settled into the oil and I drove the rest of the way to work with no noise.. Got to work, opened the Inspection Cover and found the problem . Used a magnet to fish out the mangled bolt and replaced iit . not too many other chains to check on these bikes!

Scared the hell out of me too! Thought I roasted something for sure, was just getting done beating up on my buddies Honda fury and that happened.. Think these guys could be correct about checking the Inspection Cover first, good luck!
