Hi guys....Last week I took the bike for a couple of short rides (10min) and noticed the idle was abit off/intermittent and the bike even stalled once....then went for a short ride on the bike yesterday...and started getting a horrible noise from what sounded like the front rocker cover. noise sound like something was floating around and getting court up (very scary) and abit of a chuffing in the exhaust.
I have taken the Tanks off and the front rocker cover but cant see anything wrong....now im worried it is in the engine...
I was hoping it was going to only be a broken spring or valve...
Oil is all good as well (checked that first)
what to do now....take Rocker box off?

Do the pushrods come apart on there own???
I think it might be more serious than that...Im not sure how to really explain the noise it was making, but it sound like metal getting chewed...

Yuck that sound expensive.
I would also check push rods firstly, look a springs and collets, second.
Rocker bolts would looked at during the spring check.
Take spark plugs out and turn motor over by hand, (you will need 2 more).
One thing not to do is fire the Dog up till you find something, it may be transferance from smewhere also, i know i had excessive slap in my primary chain and it sounded like #1 piston was going to shoot up between my arms.
Good luck.

Rockers are all good, also checked that there was pressure from pushrods while cover was off.
A bike mechanic friend has come over for a look an is not convinced its the engine yet. He said he will take the cover off the primary where the alternator is to have a look at the main bolt in there because he has seen them come loose before.
We ran the engine and its really hard to tell where the noise is coming from.
Will keep you posted

Check the famous Raywood gas vent tube.
Jas, this is actually something you need to do. ray rebuilt his motor and then, come to find out, it was really the vent tube in his gas tank that had vibrated loose and raising all kinds of hell. stop what you are doing and check this out before doing anything else!!!!!!!!!!!!! :2thumbs::2thumbs:

I think the vent tube needs to be a sticky on all motorcycle forums.

It got my AIH and luckily I had read about it on this forum.

did he rebuild his engine when it wasn't needed???
there is a scraping noise that sound like it is at 1/2 speed of the motor....
wouldn't the vent tube create a different noise? do you have a post on his problems?

Easier just to check.

Take off the gas cap.

Look in the opening by the fill nozzle there is a small tube welded toward the back of opening.

Inspect the weld and check if the small tube moves.

If it is suspect either way you can either wire wrap it, try and remove it or have it re welded.

The amount of racket it produces is unbelievable. And it resonates in weird place making it hard to locate.

Believe me, it should be the first thing any of us check when looking for any issues.

I have an 02 mastiff, is iton the left or right cap? I only fill in the left cap because fuel comes out the overflow if I use the right tank to fill

I don't know if the sound would transfer that far but those clutch nuts are definitely a sound to be reckoned with any problems with the clutch lately?

I would assume the right as that would be the highest of the two while the bike is in the side stand.

Being a mastiff it may not have it.

Can anyone verify for us?

Another fix is to fit a rubber fuel hose over the end of the vent tube and then it won't make such a racket.

Same tube problem here except mine was completely disconnected and had fallen in the tank. Not good on the liner either. Hell of a rattle at certain rpm's. Definitely start there. I dropped a glow stick into the tank (on a string) and used a telescoping mechanics mirror to find it.

Rollers are completely gone from one of the lifters...Need a set of Lifters and also a S&S 600 cam because the lifters have taken a couple of lopes of.....
suppose its better than having to completely strip down the engine.
