so what does a guy with little maintenance know how do with these tranny's to keep them solid, and should a guy trust a bike shop to do the required appropriate upkeep? I'm nervous now because every now and then my bike will not shift all the way when going up or down a gear, and it will really slam into the gear i'm shifting to.
Keep the fluids fresh and keep some "just in case money". No need to pay a shop for trust in my opinion. This site has all the info you need for upkeep. But shit happens, then it's time to dig in your pockets.

For what it's worth my bike has a baker and felt like it was a little clunky when shifting. I added Bel-Ray 85W -140 Hypoid Gear Oil. It's silky smooth now. Not sure what the forum favorite is, but I got this from a local ex-BDM / AIH Dealer and Mechanic. There may be better out there though.

Bel-Ray makes great products and work well with the transmission. I think the Spectro Full syn 6 spd 75-140 works a little better, but costs a few $$ more. Bel-Ray in some ways is easier to find.
But your right, general maintenance is a must with these bikes. If it comes down to needing to take your bike into a shop, do some research on that shop first. Ask on here about anyone having work done there and the outcome. These bikes are a different breed, and just because someone knows how to work on a motorcycle, does not necessarily mean they can work on a BDM.

I agree with Andrew, after buying my bike it never shifted smooth and neutral was a bear. After draining and using spectro 75w 140 it has shifted like a dream!

Sorry to hear that bud- it does definitely get frustrating after awhile. Been going through the same thing but with the motor. Never could get more than a 20 min ride in before she started acting weird, running hot, surging etc. and I'm effing stranded on the side of road. Went through all the usual suspects- fuel delivery, ignition, wiring, etc - had to re-line tanks (peeling)- and after a couple of months and almost $2k, still had the weird issue. Ran perfect when cold, comp tests looked good, fast as shit, really an odd one.

Finally nothing left to do but tear her open and take a look- front piston coming apart, metal flakes in the crank case along with a quart of oil (wet sumping for sure) - Looks like it had been run lean too many times and some things in the top end were not assembled properly by BDM (a beer-thirty motor) - So now am doing a full rebuild probably to the tune of $4k including a few upgrades- So that's about $6k out of pocket on top of buying the bike just a few months ago.

The way I look at it- sometimes it just goes like this. I've bought bikes that needed nothing but gas and regular maintenance, and occasionally the "problem child" comes along like this one. I still love the bike so just gonna get 'er done then ride the shit out of it. Frustrating, yeah.. I hope it is not too much $$ to get your dog back on the road- Hang in there, don't let it get the best of ya :D

Thats a good attitude to have, not just with the bike....but life itself. Beating yourself up over it is not going to change anything. Might as well enjoy the trip, even if its down a bumpy road. At least your getting there :D

- Yep- that's what 40+ years of life has kinda taught me (mostly via the 'hard way' lol)

I also try to remember that these things are "want to have's" and sometimes, well, things just go worse than expected. For every "killer deal" on something I've gotten, there has always been an "oh crap" later on to balance it out. Yep, that's life.. :D

But when the ol lady is giving you shit about all the $$ spent on one of the "oh crap" episodes, well that is another story.. entirely

Honestly,I think we all have been there, sometimes when we buy something used ,we r just taking over someone else's problems, but after we finally get it where we want to,it makes u want to keep that bike even more, after all we could be normal and bought a Harley or an import,so to be unique,u have to sometimes put up with some major BS.My ol lady is been giving me shit too for spending too much on my toys 2,lol

So I finally started it up for the first time since the incident and was going to take it out to see how it shifts and I noticed that as soon as I put it into gear, it was puling forward a bit with the clutch still pulled. That would explain the hard shifting. Now I just need to figure out if it's a cable adjustment or what. I do have a new cable on standby incase.

Make sure the primary fluid isn't too full! Mine was doing it too... It doesn't take much to make it drag...
