High pitch squeak prior to clutch cable break..

So my clutch cable broke on my way home from Daytona. Prior to it breaking though I had this high pitch squeak every time i pulled in the clutch lever. As soon as I let it go, regardless of being in gear or in neutral, it stopped. I will take it all apart later on today but does anyone have any idea about this squeak? I rather get the real problem fixed than to do a "patch" with a new clutch cable. I'm thinking grease on the push rod but I'm not 100% sure.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pull the outer primary and the clutch basket. Do you need the drawing from the manual.
I have the manual and I have done some research on here. The squeal I have is not very loud, not very noticeable, and I suspect it to come from the right hand side of the bike. It could be as easy as a dried out push rod but I was hoping someone would have had the same experience. The throw out bearing is on the left and I would expect it to be a lot noisier if it was going out. My squeal is from something metal rubbing metal where there should have been grease. Heading to the shop in a few....

Check you e-mail, it's a big file.
Got it, thanks a million.

Pulled out the clutch cable and sure sh!t, the cable ain't broke. It is actually well greased and looked overall in very good condition. The tip of the rod end on the other hand did not look too good so I'm leaning towards the throw out bearing now. Back to to the shop and pull the outer primary...

When you get the new throw out bearing you might want to get a new rod depending on how hot the old one got.

I bought the bike 4000 miles ago, no way it was ever there since I got it. I have cleaned up the primary cover and no sign of the bolt, nor is there any sign of it on the primary cover of it working its way out, so I truly believe it was not there from the last time it was worked on. However, I am still uncertain of it causing the throw out bearing failure or causing any other havoc in there. The clutch has worked flawlessly for the last 4000 miles and I think a new bolt, a new push rod, a new bearing, a new gasket, new oil, and properly put back together, the bike will be good to go again.

The main reason for my worry was that it felt just like the clutch cable broke but the way it broke was just wrong and the ends didn't match up. The bearing the way it was makes perfect sense as to why the clutch handle stayed in and why it made the squeak it did. I talked to Matt at Baker before I started wrenching and he was VERY helpful. However, he also thought it was just the cable. I will call him again tomorrow and order a new bearing as well as the other parts needed to get it right again.

Thanks for all inputs, it is very helpful and gives me a ton of ideas as what to check and what not....

Your already there, you might as well pull the chain assembly and clutch out to check the bearings in the transmission. Not to mention yours being an '06, it's very likely you have an old main shaft in it.
Yours most likely also has the old style clutch pushrod which has a larger outside diameter than the new. So I would get a new one for sure. That and the throwout bearing assembly are both around $38 each. If you pull the clutch out, make sure you get the seal that goes into transmission case and the clutch shim that goes behind the clutch hub. Seal is $7. Shim is $3.80.
It always amazes me that someone can leave out a bolt like that after working on the bike...unreal:loony:
