Front Jug Noise

Ok so I have the TP covers and they have always been a little on the noisy side. Well now I am getting a louder almost ticking sound in the front jug. For description pourposes it almost sounds like it is low on oil. But I know it's not have checked and re checked and getting ready to change the oil as well but wanted to know what I should look for.

Things I've checked

Exhaust tight no leaks
Oil level good

I've got almost 12,000 on her now so maybe time to adjust the rods but noise only comming from front jug. Can't hear it at idle or low rpm's. Anything over 2,500-3,000 is when you start to really hear it. This is what's stumping me. I was going to go thru the rods and everything this winter when I have the time to go through everything. It's prime time riding here right now mid 70's and hate to loose any riding time but sounds like I need to address this ASAP.

Anything I should check? Please let me know what you all think!

Thanks!

I had valve noise on mine also with the same milage on it but it was coming from both. When I changed to the 585 cam I had to readjust the push rods and was really suprised at how it little noise they make now.

I figured it was just the rods but because I only here it from the front jug has me worried.

When did you check your tappet screen last? You might want to clean it if you have not already. It would not be unheard of to have a lifter going bad either. Sometimes just changing the oil can help...what type of oil are you using?

Honestly don't know what's in it now. It is due for a change tho. Going to put full synthetic in the main no matter what kind this time.

FWIW - my 06 K9 (with TP boxes) has ticked like a sewing machine since day 1 - dealer said its normal - it does get noisier as the oil gets old and quiets down after oil changes - I use dyno oil with 1 qt. of Lucas oil treatment added as the Lucas has a noticeable quieting effect.

Ok thanks again! This is exactly how it's acting. Slowly got louder and yes it is time for oil change. Just drives me nuts now sounds like a time bomb ticking ready to blow!! I will check out the Lucas as well. Was thinking of doing Royal Purple but holy shit 14.99 a quart!!!!

Should have also mentioned that I've been using Spectro and am happy.

One of the best oils to buy would be Spectro V-twin 20/50 conventional. It's only $8 Qt. Change it every 2000-2500 miles and you will be fine.

Craig,
Mine did the exact same thing, tried all different kinds I oils, still the same. Adjusted valves till I was blue in the face still the same, swapped out to a 585 cam, a little quieter. Finally pulled the heads and both exhaust valve guides were oval, front exhaust valve bent.

Had the machine work done, new exhaust valves, replaced rocker boxes with s&s and 10000 miles later still purrs with no noise. I'm not saying this is what is wrong with yours but you described my motor to a T so I thought I'd share, for the cost if a gasket kit and finding a spring compressor it's worth it to know for sure.

If it drops a valve it's gonna be real expensive. My .02

Craig funny you say that cause I really thought it was an exhaust leak at first. I just replaced the exhaust gaskets and everything is tight there. I really here it ticking out the front jug and not the back. It is driving me nuts cause now that is all I hear.:bang:

I will change the oil (much needed anyway) then adjust the rods and if still there as loud as it is now I will definitely take a look at the exhaust valves cause I sure would hate to drop a valve or worse yet a piston.

Thanks for the input everyone much appreciated!:2thumbs:

Prolly sawing a guide, :bang: like mentioned earlier in this thread (Dezertrider). Eventually the shit will hit the fan. Geometry is WAY OFF with the TP rockers and boxes. Fix it now or big money later.
