Have you ever rode on of these S&S Evo motors before?

Its most likely normal, these are very loud motors.

Can quiet them down a bit by switching to Mobil 1 syn oil

Which rocker boxes do you have on your motor, TP or S&S. For some reason the TP boxes seem to amplify the valve train noise in my opinion. Still it wouldn't hurt to have the valve lash adjustment checked, make sure the tappet screen is clean, use the correct oil filter and grade of motor oil. As Gas Man said using a full synthetic motor oil will sometimes quiet the valve train noise down to a certain degree. I have a 05 BDM Ridgeback and the valve train was very noisy until the replaced the heads and rocker arm, they were suppose to replace the rocker boxes but they haven't so far but once they do I can tell you if it makes any difference.....
Good Luck

Doesn't the service manual says 4 turns on the valve lash and if exxcessive noise is apparent put 3 turns on the valve lash. My 05 with TP boxes did. You may want to check and find out what your dealer did.:zz2cents:

Thanks V.

I will say that even with the S&S rocker boxes, I had to ask my dealer if all that top end noise was normal - he assured me it was.

Are you convinced that the noise has increased over time - or, have you been concerned from the beginning?

You are right, "better safe than sorry" is a fine philosophy - you might want to listen to other Big Dogs for comparison.

I normally ride with an mp3 player in my ear, but last ride with P8RIOT, I just listened to the road, and all that motor noise. Wow.
Need not do that too often, need to put the blues back in...

Just a question for some of ya, some guys say what Gman says here about synthetic and the next guy will say the exact opposite.

Some guys claim, synthetic equals more noise and more potential for leaks due to it being so much thinner then regular oil. So what's some of your guys thoughts????

is there any difference, other than noise, when swapping the TP rocker boxes for S&S? is it a simple thing to do i.e. simply unbolt one and bolt the other on?

Synthetic oil is not thinner or it would not have the same Viscosity as other same weight dino oil. How ever is doe tend to clean better than and does not leave a residue when heated, higher boiling point. This is usually what causes the leaks as it will clean away the old crud over time and if you have a bad seal then a leak will show up.

my opinion is, when I changed over to Mobil1 and S&S filters, my valve noise was definitely quiter. I mean you can still hear them but not what I'd call excessively, at least to my untrained ear. I haven't noticed any sort of leaks at all. I have the S&S rocker boxes and S&S valve train in mine.

There used to be a good article on the old forum about adjusting the pushrods, with pics. Anyone know if we can still get that, or does anyone have it to post?

Dude thats how I found the trans bearing going bad. I always have MP3 or ear plugs becouse of a pair of blown ears drums. I forgot them one day and just happened to hear the bearing. Saved me some $$$. I still need the plugs but plan on pulling for a bit them on every ride now!!
