Noticed this damage to frame /swingarm after Saturdays ride ?? WTF this bike has less than 1000miles the motor just starting to open up...Is this normal I seem to remember seeing this on another link but couldnot find ..I remember hitting a bump in road but nothing that should have caused this ... Is this covered under warranty..and even if it is will it happen again? and how long will this take to fix this ?? This Sucks big time !!!!!!! not happy at all.

I believe this is the upper swing arm frame that hit the right strut? Is that what I see? Did it bend the bottom edge of the strut?

That should not have happened IMO. Even if one has the shocks adjusted too light it should bottom out before making contact like that.

You didn't have a wallet chain or something that got caught in there did you?

I see you have the Chopper don't know about the other softails if that is an issue, will check mine today but haven't noticed that before. May not apply to K-9's not sure.

No no chain or anything it is the right upper swing arm ..not bent but did crush the powercoat ... left side fine ? :loony:

I see what your saying sul but I thought that adjustment was just to take out the play in the fit between the swing arm and frame. When we took the one out of gases frame we counted how many turns it was out before taking it apart the duplicated that on reassembly. scuba man I had the exact thing happen on my 04 chopper and back then there fix was to go to a hard and heavy shock that eliminated this problem. I have also heard on the newer bikes something about adding a spacer behind the rubber bump stops. And also if I remember correctly there was some clearance issues with some of the sissybar struts as well.

it looks like he's getting side to side movement on the swingarm to cause that damage. plus i dont see any threads on the outside of that spacer.

hard to believe he'd get that much movement but something hit it.
Yeah your right I do remember seeing a couple threads showing

Pivot bolt broken on one side would cause it to move side ways. Lowering the ride height then smacking the bumpstops could put stress there. Are your bumpstops even in there?

I agree with Sul and Al...

here's the swingarm/frame spacer. All it is suppose to do is keep that swingarm from moving side to side. We did measure the turns out as Al said but on the install all I did was once the swingarm and pivit bolt were in with the spacer spun in... I spun it out tighting up/elminating the gap with the spacer. Pretty simple really

The best pics I got of the spacer on the bike....

If the pivit bolt is messed up (did you get the recall done) I would make them check the bushings... I had my recall done and one of these bushings was ceased up REAL BAD.

For whatever its worth... here's what your pivit bolt looks like

You can also adjust the rear shocks to add ride height by spinning the adjustments on them..under the tranny

If the pivit bolt is fine and that swingarm/frame spacer is tight its a matter of ride height and bump stops. I have my bump stops spaced out just for this reason. You could do the same with fender washers... but to get at it easily you have to pull the rear wheel.

Here's what I mean by spacing them out.

I know I have heard of some guys getting BDM warrenty it... saying it was the rear shocks that failed or something of that nature. I had the same wear marks on the top of my swingarm form the swing arm bottoming out on the fender struts.

Thanks all ...To me it just looks like it bottomed out "the strut did not hit",the swing arm hit the frame under the strut ..No side to side movement .I never touched the adjustment but it seems it is too soft or the bump stops did not work !!! This will be addressed when I take it in for recalls ...thanks for all who answered .

If the swingarm hit the frame on the right side... then maybe that spacer needs to be adjusted/tightened. There should be plenty of clearance there. And if it was a bump stop problem then the swingarm would have hit the fender struts.

There is no adjustment to the rear struts other than ride height.

Let us know what the dealer says...
