have 08 k-9 EFI, speed-o just stopped working, the tach lights work normal, and when I start the bike the needle still sweeps like normal but just noticed that the speed-o was not working, may have been a while I dont look at it much, anyone have a starting point. also it will not switch from the milage to the trip numbers, (need that for a gas gauge).. thanks in advance.

Check your speed sensor on the trans
Make sure it's not covered in metal debris

The EFI models should have a low fuel light.

Thanks Kaptian, thats where I was starting to look. everything works sitting still so my pee brain was moving into the moving parts area. Work just keeps getting in the way of trouble shooting. and have been using the time i do have to put a few unregestered miles on it lol..

If the needle is resetting at start-up then the speedo power wires are connected properly. Sounds like a speedo signal wire issue or trans sensor as mentioned earlier by Paul.

looking at a wiring diagram in my manual shows 3 wires in the circuits of the speedo and speed sensor at transmission. 1) Red-power 2) Black-ground 3) Green-signal
Trouble shooting has you first checking for power and ground for each then looking for a short or open in the signal wire. Of course as with any electrical issue, any connector in the circuit is to be inspected. There's more, such as how to test the speed sensor, but these are a good starting point.

Can you point me in the right direction for testing the speed sensor itself? I just want to know for troubleshooting and didn't see this info anywhere in my exploration of the internet yet! I have a friend on the forum who's speedo isn't working but has power and we are troubleshooting together to fix and learn more about our bikes.

I took the trans sensor out and cleaned it, there were no metal or anythig on it. rerouted and inspected the wire very closely. no damage. so I put it all back together and rode around the block to make sure the rest of it still worked. dont know what I did but speedo and milage working like new. guess it was some PFM. so till it goes out again Im riding it or winter, whichever comes first. thanks for all your help. Testing photo sensor

I have a 02 Prosport and I have the same problem, so this is what I did. I put the sensor in a vice, lightly snug it down. Hook up a spare battery to it using jumping wires. Use positive side of battery to red wire on sensor. Neg. side of battery to black wire and hook up your volt meter using your red probe to the green or if you have it, white wire for the sensor part. And hook up the black probe of the meter to the neg. side of battery. Put your meter on 1.5 or 5 volts and see if you can get it to show something on the meter by waving something metal real slow right in-front of the sensor. Move it slowly back in fourth. I did all of this and it showed like 0.00 to 0.001, 0.002, back and fourth. This tells me that my sensor is good.
