Baker Open Primary

I know there are a number of you with Baker Open Primaries.
I had one installed on my 06 Mastiff and I could hardly pull the clutch lever in !
The guy who installed it said that's the way it is. Well it only took about 100 miles before the clutch cable snapped....
Had a Bandit clutch before the Baker and the difference is day and night.
I spoke to James S. at Baker and he is working on a solution.
Has anyone else had this issue?

the only one I have experience with is mine, so keep that in mind when I say you should stay away from that guy. Either you happen to get a bum part or he assembled something wrong. Mine is easy to pull and shifts smoothly.

I'd say installed wrong , and maybe the wrong springs ,, I have a karata and it pulls very easy

There has to be something wrong with the install, mine work fine, never had a problem with hard pull, or busted cables.

I would say most likely the ball and ramp was set wrong from get go...that clutch should pull just as easy as your other one did. Time to find a new tech

Well after speaking with James S. at Baker he checked back to last year and found that there was a brief period where they ran out of the standard springs and substituted heavy duty racing springs:angry:
He is shipping out a set of standard springs NO CHARGE and hopefully my problem is solved.
Jeff Z. of NAMZ Custom Cycles in Pa. just did a complete re-wire of my bike and he will change out the springs so I know it will be done right....keeping my fingers crossed !

Never heard of this....last I knew, Baker did not offer a heavy duty spring for that clutch
I have been modifying another comanies spring to fit in the clutch to give more spring pressure.
But, this does not explain why cable broke...even with a comp spring, it should not fail.

Well Baker sent a thinner clutch plate but it's no better:angry:

Double checked ball / ramp and lubed up new clutch cable but you still need two hands to pull the clutch lever in :angry:

I reached out to James at Baker again...frustrating:bang::bang:

Thinner clutch plate? What plate? You mean diaphragm spring?
What is your procedure of clutch adjustment?
You want to make sure the ramp is aligned properly. If the outer ramp (has threads for pushrod) is not sticking out beyond the inner ramp around 1/16" or so, then it's not lined up properly.
You also might want to check the Spring dome height of the clutch. It should be around .050"

Andrew got my Baker for me and I installed it myself. Clutch pull is very slightly harder to pull than the "Easy-Pull" clutch of the '08. I easily pull the clutch in with 2 fingers, and the clutch is smooth as butter and if I was you I believe I would make a road trip to see Andrew. Good luck in resolving the problem with your Baker.

This is the clutch plate I was referring to....

Sorry, Baker calls its a clutch diaphragm spring...
