Primary leak

I brought my bike in to get a leak fixed , it seemed to be the inner primary so they were suppose to change all the seals primary and inner primary, it still has a drip after ridding for an hour or so, not real bad but just paid to have it fixed, its definitely not coming from the tranny , I use red line so it would be pink, they said it must be coming from somewhere else .

Where else could it possibly be?

Should they be liable and fix it right ????

It seems to be coming from the inner primary , but I will try looking over the starter. I had no idea the starter would leak oil??

The starter bots to the inner primary. Could be o-ring on the starter, or more commonly, primary oil getting in to the starter and then leaking out. Just a thought.

Thanks I didn't know that
I just went out and checked it out with a flashlight and I also ran my hand under the starter and it was all clean , no oil.

It had the drip when I bought it last year , I first thought it was the drain plug , then changed the primary gasket and still the drip . They told me it was the inner primary and I paid them to change it etc... Although its not as bad it still drips . After riding for an hour or so , when the motor gets hot enough, I put it on the kickstand and after 15 or 20 min it will begin to drip I get a spot about the size of a half dollar, wtf?

Welcome to the club!! Same thing here! Funny thing is if I ride it a short distance no leak when I bring it home. But if I ride all day and get her good and hot bam there is the leak again!!

Just enough to piss me off and wanna fix it!

I chased a primary leak for a while. I changed both inner & outter O-rings & it always came back. When I was doing this, i generally put the O-rings on dry.

I finally realized it was the outter primary & now I use a little silicone on the o-ring and the problem was solved.

You have a 2004, no O-ring seal for primary cover and your starter is not the oil leak...that came on the 2005 and later models.
Most likely if it's towards back of bike on inner primary, it's coming from Main primary seal or starter jack shaft seal...they might have put one in backwards.
Otherwise, it's coming from transmission seals. Did they say what seals they replaced? Part numbers?

You might want to check the jackshaft bolt, inside the primary. That little sucker has a seal of some sort and if the bolt loosens in some way, oil will work it's way through the jackshaft assembly and make it look like your starter is leaking or your jackshaft seal is bad.

You could also put some RTV in there to enforce that little seal, at least that's what I did and fixed my leak.

This is what it says on the bill,

labor 237.50
special order item. transition inner bearing race and seal. $ 49.98
oil drag, sportster tr 36040001 1oil drag chain/ gear cs/12rimary oil -$ 7.79.00

They said when the took it apart to change the inner primary seal, they found a crack in the transition inner bearing, does it look like vthe replaced the primary or inner primary seals?

I will but I think its the inner primary and they did not change it , I was told 20,000 miles or so is normal for a inner primary change. after the dual fire ignition install and another 300 this time around I am done spending for this yr gonna have to live with the leak for now and probably attempt to change the seals myself in the off season, kind of pissed off it wasn't fixed after charging me 300 bucks!!!

I had a simular thing going on with a customers scoot. It was leaking from the inner primary and the starter. It was leaking around the front o-ring and lower front mount area where the inner primary mates up to the motor surface. I added a thin layer of black permatex to the o-ring and mounting surface of the inner primary. Added it to the starter o-ring and his scoot is dry as a bone now. He just contacted me yesterday and said his scoot is still screaming and as dry as can be. Not one drip! He knows I can't stand any leaks... :D :2thumbs:

Absolutely.

Your generic "COMEBACK" is what is know as I came in the doctor's office stinking like shit. Doctor gives me a breath mint. My nose [oil bag] wasn't dripping so what other 2 holes are left? That's why malpractice insurance is for the inept doctors like inept mechanics [need] the same policy.

So they eat their own job or it's a court date for them, they charge you again? No, that's not how it works. It's own up to your inept diagnostics. It was not solved, the question is why? Groove in shaft? Wrong seal? New old stock seal and it's dry and crack and slipped thru the builder's: eye didn't catch or think about that so it's your fault. No, that's not how it works, that person touching that whole deal is all back on his lap... don't touch it.

Why was not a dye placed in either the mouth or rear end? One was going to fart out the dye, pepper the tranny case with a fling or spit it up you see the primary is dripping and that was just sitting on the side stand at idle. All that tranny oil on that side, they have grandpa's 1960's black light to see the dye shoot out someplace?

Can't be 2 oil leaks or you'd see both colored oils, yes? So do not let them say it's your fault when it came in to 'repair oil leak.' I have no clue where the leak is, that's why I came to you with a sign on your door saying, we fix oil leaks, tire leaks, and compression leaks. And if you can't do it right the first time, who's fault is that?
