It appears that my 05 Ridgeback is in need of a battery, I am looking for suggestions for the best battery for the $$$$$. I believe the replacement battery is made by Deka/East Penn and the part number ETX20L. My battery is 6 7/8 long, 3 7/16 wide, 6 1/8 height, with 270 CCA. In advance thats for your advice..........

Just as a side note, I found a battery made by Big Boar that has the same dimensions that has a true CCA 350 rating. Has anyone tried one yet?????

Thanks for the reply, that battery is supplied to Interstate by Yuasa. When you installed it did you notice any improvement in cranking performance?

I think an important point is to get a AGM battery.

I went with a standard HD AGM battery for a softail. Like $108 and you can get it at any HD dealer and warrenty at any dealer.

I ordered a Big Boar 350 for my 03 Mastiff Wednesday. Not here yet but I believe it is a top notch battery with more CCA's than most. On my Mastiff I need all the cranking power I can get. Read a thread here that spoke highly of the Big Boars and that helped me with my decision. By the way , retail is $169.00 and I paid $125.00 I think plus shipping.

You may want to try the Braille battery, same dimensions as the YUSA & Deka but has 425 CCA. That add'l power comes with a price, around $160.00 and thats the cheapest I could find.

Okay Everyone, I did the leg work and found the manufacture who provides the OEM battery to BDM. The name of the company is East Penn manufactuing also known as Deka. The part number is ETX20L and it is a AGM which stands for absorbed glass mat and was developed for the personal watercraft industry. It is the exact battery in every detail except for the applied Big Dog stickers and the foam backing which I removed and applied to the new battery. This is the first battery I have had to purchase and according to the date code my battery is 3 years old this month. I hope this helps someone in the future and I want to thank everyone for there input.:2thumbs:

as twowheel says - "Absorbed Glass Mat" - they are sealed - don't leak and don't need topping up

Yeah AGM... instead of the battery plates being filled with luqued acid, they have these glass mats that are soaked in the acid then put in there. They are more resistant to changes and have a longer life.

AGM's are common in the RV business do to the good power storage and recharging abilities. You need to watch at what voltage you charge them at. Newer battery chargers have a AGM setting. Overcharging, "heat" and too high of a charging voltage will destroy them. I think off the top of my head the max voltage you can put to them is 13.5 volts.

Big Boar is an awesome battery, but expensive. If you use the Interstate, use the YTX20HL, 310 CCA. Big Dog suggests using their battery, and I've seen a lot of problems caused by using cheap aftermarket versions. Also, most of the current speedo problems are caused by weak/cheap batteries. Most importantly, ALWAYS keep your bike on a trickle charger!!

2wheel mentioned the foam pad under the battery - very important to keep it on the new battery when replacing it. VIBRATION kills batteries!

UPDATE: 4/15/11
I just bought a CYTX20HL-BS Interstate. Was told it was a 350CCA, it's really another 310CCA (U-fill-it) battery to replace a failed, less than a year old Interstate YTX20HL factory filled P.O.S. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Interstate makes a battery , part # FAYTX20HL that is 310 CCA and my cost on it is $69.95 plus the old battery core. It is the exact size of most of the batteries in the late model Big Dogs. Same exact spec's as the stock battery except the CCA's .

Should have read this thread in detail....BigBlueDog....don't know if your price is still that low, but let me share my experience with the ever confusing battery saga. It is an every two year deal with me from the time I starting riding harleys.

My BD Chopper is an 03 and I am on my third battery. Not too bad. Always on a tender. The stock battery lasted to some time in 06, at which time a got an Interstate FAYTX20HL. The joy of hearing no hesitation, starter over heating and wondering it I would have to jump start it....usually after it sat for a time, 2-3 months, without starting. A couple weeks ago the weather warmed up and I started it with that same old......it's taking too many tries to get this baby started and one more try it's going to die. I hooked up the car charger and put the switch in the "start" position. Bike fire-up without hesitation. This told me it was time once again.....replace the battery because it sucks you have to worry, am I burning up a starter, or will I get stuck.

I was just going to replace it with the same Interstate, but at $105 I had to do a little research. I found that most of these batteries are manufactured in the same factory and simply get different labels. I ended up at a BatteriesPlus and got a education. You can't always count on CCA ratings being measured the same and there are acid sealed and there are gel sealed. The replacement equivalent to the Interstate with 310 CCA and appeared to be the exact same battery with a 1 yr warranty was $87. What I ended up buying was a new gel filled, 2yr warranty, 270 CCA. It's an AMG, X2 Extreme. It cost $114. I like the terminal configuration better and the engine/starter spun like never before even before setting over night on the tender.

Don't know what it all means other than battery science, and prices change at the drop of a hat.

Just put the braille in my scoot and it spins the motor like a top. The problem I had with my previous big boar after 2-1/2 years it has never failed me but the terminals were all cracked and I figured it was time to replace anyway. The braille has a more solid type terminal and close to the same price.
