03 Bulldog Popping like crazy

Hey guys, I need to lean on you once again. I have a 03 Bigdog Bulldog that had some trouble running last year after it heated up. We got through that but now the bike is popping like crazy after releasing the trottle. As well as the popping while driving, I get a tremendous gun shot pop at times when I start the engine. Can you guys give me some ideas as to what it may be?

How did you fix the other problem you were having? New ignition?
You might have an intake leak right now...have you checked intake seals for leakage?
Also, the rubber plugs on the top of the carb can dry rot and cause an intake leak.
Fuel/air screw in carb can also cause this if someone has played with the adjustment, and/or the needle itself is worn out.
If non of the above, you might have a problem with the ignition system itself.

Carb nipples

Are you talking about the two goldfish colored nipples? One has a black rubber cover and the other has a small black wire tie around it, but the nipples hole is open to the air.

Yes, if they are plugged with no vacuum hose going to them, you want to make sure the rubber plug is good. You can pick up a pack of them at most any auto parts store..1/8" in size works good, then put small zip tie around them for security.

O.K. I checked the nipples, one of them looks like it was cut. The wire tie is the only thing left with top of the nipple exposed. Is there anything I could do to get better performance from the bike with these two air inlets? If not I just cover them up?

The plug definitely helped. I am still getting gun shots once and a while at start up, but the popping after throttle release seems much better. Thank you for the help.

adjust your carb like the S&S carb manual says.

I had to get different jets because of my open pipes, I was running lean and it would pop bad on decelleration, and cough while riding, just like the S&S manual says.

check and make sure you exhaust bolts are tight, mine were slightly loose where they bolt to the cylinders and it would pop and backfire constantly.
