117 horsepower & torque

So I had my 117 ci 2005 mastiff on the dyno today and it posted a 92.97 horsepower and max torque 102.35 . the technician has experience with Big Dogs and S&S engines and told me it should or could be around 120 horsepower. I have a 29.5 intermediate and a 70 main I think it's too lean as it takes fuel to make horsepower. I ordered a 31 intermediate and 76 main jets and will be installing them next week . Has anyone had your dog on the dyno ? And is 120 horsepower possible ?

What yours made is in the normal range for a stock bike. Mine makes 115hp,and 128ft./lbs. with the .600 cam in it. 120 is definitely possible. Hell 140,or more is possible. Just depends on how much $$$ you want to spend?

He was implying stock 117 ci could make 120 HP which mine is I wonder what the actual rating is from Big Dog ? I'll have to look in manual don't think it's in there though.

Hey Scott,

Don't know what you are running for pipes and intake but 31/33 inter. and 76/78 main is about normal for some exhaust and air intake upgrades.:2thumbs:

I had this question before and I actually called S&S Technical department. The motors supplied to Big Dog. The 107's are in the 110-115hp the 117's are in the 115-120hp. That's according to the Technical support guy, he said Big Dog's motors were spec'ed different including high pressure oil pumps also. He stated the reason the 117's produce only 2 or 3 more HP over the 107's is due to the emissions that had to be done to meet Federal law. In keeping the HP relatively the same S&S had produced a slightly larger moter the 117. This is also one of the reasons the 107 is such a sought after motor. No federal emission regulations on it and it builds HP ! Had S&S not built the 117 and just kept the 107 and applied the Federal emission requirements to the 107, the Tech guy said Big Dog would have had a 95hp motor in there bikes. So that is the history of how the 117 came about.

I think if your running a Super E from the factory then your also running smaller valves both of which would lead to the lower horsepower numbers. The motors with the larger valves are running Super G carbs

Did he say how they were measured? I'm thinking those numbers are at the motor, not the tire. Going off of the dyno runs I've seen, and what others have reported their dogs to be putting out. Seems an average for stock dogs is around 95-105hp to the ground. Figuring for loss through the primary, and trans. it sounds right to me. Just my semi-educated guess though.

Curtis, is the the Super E carb normal or is it the G?
For BIg Dog There Really Isn't A "Normal"
Some Bikes Have Es Some Have Gs
My 06 K9 Came Stock With A G
Raywoods 05 ChOpper Came With An E
03 And Earlier 107s Have Gs
I'm Sure There IS Some Format To It WitH All The different States And EPA regs
If You Really WaNt To Make PoWer THough You Have To Open It Up And Let It Breathe

My bike was purchased in jersey I think it had the carburetor baffle remove and ya probably smaller valves as it does have a super e carburetor. I would like to break 100 horsepower

If it were me. Take the heads off and send them to Winston Salem NC to the king of HP Kendall Johnson. He did the head work on my Harley Ultra classic. Port, polish, decked the heads .010 bring my compression up to 10.5:1,also new injectors had to be installed to feed the new HP . After the stage 1,2&3 with his head work and also a 2 into 1 thunder header and installing a power commander and new cam from Kindall, I have a 80" EVO motor dynoing 89 HP. Factory HP was 48. So basically I doubled it! Kendal is very reasonably priced and his work is so fine. I am pulling the heads off my Big dog's 107 S&S this coming Nov and letting him do a valve job, port and polish on them.

my stock 08 was 96 horspower and 109 pounds of torque - got a 585 cam - V&H 2-2 and a PM aircleaner and now at 98 HP and 127 torque with 31 and 76 jets

Looks like you get more torque with the 585. My Stock 08 with V&H 2 into 1 has 106 HP and 115 Ftlbs of torque. Don't think I'll mess with this.

Myrtle Beach Dyno

Had the "Old" 07 chopper put up on the dyno In Myrtle Beach at Suck Bang Blow 4 corners just to take a peak at the A/F ,and was curious about the HP of course, Running stock breather with a K/N filter, "homemade washer baffles" on a set of supertrap drags, other then that stock, been running that combo now for 3 years The A/F was pretty close with a possible change to the intermediate? think I'm running a 33/32 have to look but was just a tad rich Numbers were 106.25 Hp and 114.68 TQ from what I have read here this is pretty typical ? The Dyno operator /owner Horst Power Performance out of Oviedo FL was a very honest and straight shooter , I would recommend him!:2thumbs: It seems seat of the pants to be a strong running bike ..." developed a bit of decel pop on the way down , not real bad and it comes and goes but while on the dyno it barked a few times pretty good and spit some fire ! 585cam change one day maybe but its runs so good just the way it is!!! We rode into the bar a few times and woke up the place just to let them know the dog was back in town ...was a good time !

Oh yea the original battery still kicking it with somewhere around 15000 miles and with the org EHC, and we got drenched on the way back real good!!! for about 100 150 miles oil pressure light and neutral light on the dash was illuminated dim while riding in the deluge but quickly went back to normal .. I must have a good one ?

I have the thunder baffles and mine barked real good each time on the decel down from 6 grand. The dyno runs seem a little hard on the engines. Sounds like you have good numbers I'm going to install 31 and 76 jets currently have 29.5 and 70 I'm sure it's lean right now and these new jets may be a tad rich but it will be an improvement I'm sure and a cheap improvement.
