Tranny Breather

Once again, i have a small but annoying problem.

After changing my motor oil and filter and plugs, i decided to check my tranny oil.
The dip stick has white goo all over it, sure signs of water ingress.

Firstly can water get in via anywhere else except the breather tube?
Has anyone used a one way valve on the hose?
Has there been a recall or anything like that on the 06/07/08 trannies because of this?
My plan is to drain what i can, top up with some oil i have, ride the machine for 20 miles till things warm up, dump the oil and refill with correct oil AGAIN.

Anyone think of another way or an extra step or 2?

Thanks in advance.

1. How many miles on the bike? - Oh, my guess is not much.
2. How long a distance did you say the bike is warmed up to? - Oh about 20 miles worth.
3. How about giving the bike a really-really long run like 120 round trip kind of warm it to bake the condensation buildup between the short 20 mile runs.
4. You mean I'm going to have to ride it farther and make time being a biker and not profiling for 20 miles sort of?
5. I thinkso. Because you can plumb the thing all you want is add more tunnel for the condo to settle into.
6. Shit, you might have something there but I readown to here and I don't make sense is do you get it?
7. Anyone? Yes, that's what I was saying.

Condensation is caused from extreme heating and cooling..isn't it warm over there? Not like here in NY during winter months of less than 30 deg...even so, you will not get so much condensation that it shows up in your transmission oil.
It sounds like your getting moisture from someplace else...have you been riding in a lot of rain? Also, have you noticed any oil leaks? What type oil are you running? Sometimes the Redline oil can foam up and look like it has water in it.

I changed the oil last October, and have ridden about 5000 klm since then, some in heavy rain.
I noticed the breather hose is directly in front of the rear tyre (mite shift that) and is open to the elements, gearboxes are like some pumps so it could suck as well as vent.

3 weeks ago i did a 4 day ride, no rain...................but i was carring a load and some high speed stuff, i am worried i may have done some damage.
I think i will after flushing it out with diesel and oil i will open the top cover ans see what other shit has happened.
I did drop the drain plug last night and got 2 table spoons of rusty looking oil into the tub.....................ouch.

On a couple of differant occasions I have run into mud dober wasps pluging the end of the tube. When this happens, the trany won't breathe and the seals will leak. I've taken the nut off of a brass compression fitting, 3/8'' or 1/2'', I don't remember. One of those sizes will screw on the rubber hose with a piece of screen, like you would use on a facuet or bong. I thought I'd throw this out for a FYI, since were talking about vent tubes.

Thanks Shannon,
I am thinking of running a dif breather on the end of the pipe and running it up under my seat.
That way it is out of the water, able to breathe and stop those bloody wasps.

But why has my box got sooooooo much water in it.............too much for condinsation.

I have no oil leaks anywhere.

Worse thing you can do is fiddle fuck with the parts. The top cover is sealed. If I were you, I'd think about all the transmissions breathing in the world [that are like yours] and are they on the side of the road with gear damage? No.

Can bigdog claim he has seen his share of fork nuts and fork ends that are exposed to the elements and is he changing rows of gears from rust? Don't those old pans and shovels still hum along? And also, big may have very little trouble breaking loose those bolts or nuts with break-free or some chemical like vinegar that will make that bolt all looking like it came out of a new box? Well, almost.

Your external parts look pretty and dry now, right? They show no flung off wrench head and mung the look of the bolt heads, right? Especially one sounding like you about being anal internally. Relax. Imagine you whack one externally, gouge the finish getting the paper off that didn't show any leaks.

I'm just saying I see it all or most of the time. It's the 'if it ain't broke syndrome is mirror mirror on the wall.'

I sold a car that ran one mile to and one mile from work and it had condensation sludge when I'd change the oil. Sold it to someone at work and they told me it didn't take a drop of oil crossing the border. Take that as a condensation example like I'm worried about the internals and say, do you keep that close to the washer/dryer? Lots of clothes being dried and the wet has to go somewhere?

Pulled the top cover off last night.
Very little sludge any where, box looks clean and free from any rust marks.
Flushed out with Diesel and watched for any "stuff" that may runout........nothing.

Put the cover back on, redirected the breather tube up beside the filler tube and cable tied it. Put a Diff breather from a Toyota truck in the hose, filled the tranny up with diesel and left to soak till i get home latter today.
I will drain it ................ again, fill it up with some 15W 40 engine oil take it for a ride about 5 miles, drope that oil and then add the proper tranny oil.

Hope that works.

I'd say your vent is most likely where your geting your moisture, especially if your riding in the rain much and have no leaks... I say good idea on moving it higher. At lest you'll know if that was the issue next time you check it!!!
I thought this forum was a place to get to know other big dog owners and get good advice to issues we may have....NOT a place to get criticized for the issues or questions we may have... But opinions vary right!
I know I've had several issues and a lot of good suggestions, and my trans is off getting rebuilt as we speak with Andrew. Since there are actually several very helpful people on here..

Yeh Dan your dead right on all counts.

Met some nice people on here and in person on Dogs, this is the most helpfull forum i have ever been assosiated with.

The breather looks the goods and should keep it out of harms way.
That said though, the oil from my tranny may have imigrated to the primary i will dump that today measure and see if the primary has "made oil".

:D It's not the ventube, Danny. It's a large cover cavity filled with air? Hello? I cannot help you be stepping on my oily rag with that tranny builder guy that sort of is in the same league as you? Look at your feets. Are they oily like his? There is no rain happening is there? Once or twice in the rain or is this some washington state bike?

I'd be checking for foam in the crankcase and under the oil tank cap. You knowhat a reach around is? Waste of wallet. I have these huge air gaps and in those gaps lay air.

I have to walk your theory like listen to dis, Dan. I'm going to distill oil. I'm going to make heat go up a rubber hose and cause all sorts of condensation. Dan, think about it. How much is that tube causing friction to cause heat? Are not the gears meshing the heat? The hose's air is squared as opposed to the air is squared under that trans cover? You see the volume difference now?

See where stalagmites and stalactites begin from the top cover? A hose is neutral air inside the tube, right?

You see how that sounds like you are taking something? Are wee=d is piss in this dixie for me. Others think I'm on some sort of and you whack this hose thread up with that theory?

Where is your basic science? You live in the USA? No wonder this place is on diecline is dying slowly, no? No math to the square. No air in the head but empty of thatoo!

But opinions vary right!
They have to or this would be a dull place, no? Learn ass chewedoubt without a

Yeah, that's him. The doper. He told me I was on something or needed to get back to some sick ass addictive something he may be pouring down his gullet is I already offered a urine dixie cup full. But that guy might need to be all wickywoo on something so as to function? It's all alleged too, right? It's just a bike, right?

I don't do that chest bumping or grabassing I have the same model home, model wife, model mistress, model train setshit is means nothing but one more generic question about the vacuum we live in.

No, here you go again. Stay focused on the thread. Do not bring in commenting on my answer that you think is towards you. It's toward your abstract you bring in. I answered with Dan adding more vapor is adding more hose volume of air. I slit a rubber hose end that fits over the trans' steel tube and call it a day. Any air is going to buckle that slit and breath 14.7 all day long and use less hose to add more water vapor to the air gap it already rides in. Get it?

I say if you do not stay focused on the OP's problem, sit at your computer and  live with it. Stay with tranny talk or your abstract might wrinkle my nose is hose like this thread is getting more hosing you see you adding hose?

He/She contributes NOTHING other than pissing people off. :loony::loony:
You [and a few] be the only one(s) getting pissed off about nothing. It's just a bike with a generic problem. It's going to be how you read my post is if you stand on my oily rag and think it's about you or the abstract and you cannot tell the difference....

Not my fault how the message comes across you reading it and now use is feets is full of 50w racing standing there thinking I am insulting you or the atmosphere we live in?

Then don'tread on me :flag: Some here enjoy reading my posts. I hear chanler taught you how to 3amigo. Chanlure me over teach me how to hack? Teach me how to hose? Not.
