Bad speedo sensor?

That sounds like my 04 Pitbull. It never sweeps clockwise. Just a dip and back to zero. No problems though.....

Big Dog came out with a fix for that I believe. It was a speedo flash, but I wouldn't worry about it if it's working ok. My 05 Ridgeback does the same thing, but works just fine...

They can hook your speedo up and "flash" the existing program there by updating it to a newer version. Flashing also allows for programg fixes. A "flash" is simply reprogramming.

Most likely your sensor is broken. I had the same issue, replaced the sensor and all works fine. Don't forget to recalibrate your speedo after sensor change (there's a topic around here about that). :2thumbs:

Actually, you shouldn't need to recalibrate the speedo after installing the new sensor.

The speedo recognizes only the pulses generated from the sensor. The pulses are going to be the same because they are picked up from gear teeth which haven't changed.

Calibration is used to determime how many pulses from the sensor in one mile. Changing the sensor could only affect having a slightly different sensor signal amplitude which has no impact on calibration.

FLASHING THE SPEEDO:
I don't think there is any "Flash" or reprogramming of the speedo head itself. The upgrade you see mentioned here on the forum for the speedo "after startup reset" is a function of the EHC programming which is done via the USB port.

I got one that you would normally put on a 5 speed evo style transmission and used the plug from my original sensor. Works just fine.

Just removed the sensor. There's another sensor
mounting hole behind it with a plug in it. Why two?

After some research it appears the Baker 6 spd Overdrive
has the mounting hole inside requiring the plug. The outside
for the sensor. Thought I found the problem, sensor was
not plugged in all the way but no such luck.

Installed new Evo sensor (74437-96B). All works well. I'm the 4th
owner and can tell its been broke for some time. Previous owner
had it for a year. This is a 2003 showing 7100 miles. I can tell by
the wear on the bike it has more than 7000 miles. Thanks for all
the replies.

If it has the original ehc you might still find out the current mileage . A big dog dealer can check your computer software for mileage even though the speedo was broke.

I was too but my bike had a bad speed sensor odometer did not work and my local dealer hooked the computer up to my ehc and it recorded the mileage despite not sure but he knew all about it told me before hand he would be able to get mileage anyway. The ehc records snapshots periodically high revs and such if I remember right. no charge for the check as I had other work done too.

Does not have the original EHC, and I don't know of a
Big Dog Service dealer in Ohio. I don't even know anyone
that works on them at all in my area.
