Chrome Pulley on Bull Dog

I have heard different opinions on this... I have chromed my rims and want to chrome the pulley. One dealer said "no way, because of the teflon coating on the teeth" and the other one saying " we do it all t he time...other after market pulleys come with out the teflon, so if it comes off no big deal".

Thoughts?!

More than likely if you chrome it, someday it will beguin to squeek like the 2004 and older bikes without the teflon on them. It was a pretty big problem before thay started doing the coating.

I thought the newer pulleys had something called "hard chrome" on them now.

No, it is a Teflon coating on the sprocket portion.

What is the big deal about not having your teeth chrome.......chrome the rest of it and leave the teeth alone. Big dog changed it for a reason.

You can't do that...if you could that would be a no brainer. When it get's dipped, it will will strip the teflon off the teeth. ...as so I have been told.

Big Dog, says don't do it....dealer says to do it! Love it to be chrome for cleaning and matching the chrome rim....but don't want issues down the line!

My 04 has a small squeak. never could figure it out. Can teflon be put on the teeth?

One option would be dip the pulley chrome then mask it off and bead blast the teeth to remove the chrome coating and get a surface that could be teflon coated onto. The chrome coating basically is clear it is the nickel layer underneath that we really see.

Here is what BD had to say....even though my dealer still says he has never had a problem in doing it for years.

Tim, the chroming process requires the Teflon to be burned off before
the pulley can be chromed. The chroming will not hold up to the wear
caused by the belt running on it and will eventually fail. A chrome
pulley is louder when in operation. If your pulley and or transmission
alignment is not perfect this will be amplified by not having the Teflon
coating. Aftermarket pulleys do not use Teflon because it is cheaper for
them to leave it off.

Chrome plating the pulley is not advisable. The thickness of the chrome plating and its base plating can change the pitch of the teeth on the pulley and cause belt problems.

Well that sucks....someone will just have to make a cover for it.

Have Supermax install there teflon teeth on your pulley and have them chrome it.

My pully is not chromed. Its polished. Should it stick?

Ok, that's too funny...I'm driving the dealer nuts!

I have contacted SuperMax like suggested above...they said to send it to them for machining, they them who is chroming it and they will send it there...and then the chromer will need to send it back to them and then they will put there "poly" on...which they say will last longer than the teflon or chrome... question I have with that, is it seems like I will be adding a lot of thickness wich seems like it will effect opperation?

They do so don't bother using a Billet cleaner on them ... no effect. Good one Gas.

For all that BS, why not just run a chain? I see so many customs with chains, and I think a nice nickel chain is badass, and they really aren't that dirty. My issue is I waited so damn long to get to it, I don't feel like having the bike in pieces for a month while I figure out what spacers and sprockets I need...

Im thinking about having my rear pulley chromed, since I have been able to obtain chrome factory wheels. I know the pro's and con's of chroming the pulley has been talked about in the past but has anyone done it with long term success? Suggestions on someone that can chrome it? I know there was talk about Teflon coating, but I was also told that the later models didn't have Teflon on the pulley.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I had my pulley chromed by Meclec in California (same company the factory used), and had no issues for 5 years. By the way, can you even see your pulley with the bags on your bike?

I too had mine done by Meclec and have had no issues what so ever ! Would do it again in a second. Did it when the bike had 1000 miles. I have 9500 now.
