Thinking of buying this Big Dog. Advice?

Hi.

Presently got an old HD Shovel project on the go and a Twin Cam Softail I use as my daily driver. Saw this Big Dog today. It's in need of a bit of TLC (quite scruffy) but the bones of it seem OK. It's a 2000 model. Oh, bit of smoke on start-up (took a few seconds to clear). Think it had been standing a while.

Can I ask members what I should be checking for and any idea as to the bike's value?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

You can try Kelly blue book or NADA to see if there is any info on this.. I don't know much about it but I would check the recalls from that bike. I am pretty sure the older dogs were pretty reliable and the nice part of it is that they still used standard Harley parts until 04. shooting from the hip I would say its worth a few thousand at best.... to me it doesn't look like a big dog but its hard to tell.... I was still riding crotch rockets in 2000. from the sounds of it sounds like you are mechanically inclined so it should not be to much to do your own work....

With a few small differences it looks to be a Pit Bull (rigid frame) turn signals, grips, mirrors, seat, pegs, brakes (PM) , handle bars all seem to be factory Big Dog; However, I haven't seen a stock Dog with a springer front end or laced wheels. This year and model retails for $5-$7K in excellent condition here in the States (Illinois)

Thanks again for the replies. This one actually comes with a spare, and I think original, front end. I've decided it's just too expensive given the condition. I may look for another but it'll be when I'm next in the US. In the mean time, I'm test riding this tomorrow:

Not quite the same thing but still a nice bike.
