07 Pitbull Starter issue

Alright guys,

I just got my Pitbull last week from a buddy and tonight on my way home i had an issue with my starter.

I stopped at the gas station for a drink and when I went to start the bike the starter just spun freely and sounded like it was not engaging anything.

Frustrated I walked the bike home since I was only a mile away and parked it in the garage. I figured I would post up here looking for advice while I cool off.

The bike has 9k miles on it. I did notice a loud "gunshot" backfire last night when we were leaving dinner. It was so loud everyone on the patio jumped. Had no problem starting the bike today until the ride home tonight.

I live in Dallas, Tx and I am afraid to see what a local shop would charge just to diagnose the bike. I am not afraid to turn a wrench by any means. I am just not familiar at all with this bike.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I spent the majority of the day at Strokers on sunday hanging out. I talked with their service department, and they don't take appointments it is all first come first serve. The bike just broke down tonight so I figured I might try to fix it myself while we ahve some storms moving in

Is there a simple way to determine if I broke the Jack shaft?

Looking into tearing it apart tomorrow. Anyone have a Service manual for my bike?

Looks like Wild Steed worx could rebuild it, plan on contacting them and determining if they can replace/repair.

You can pull the inspection plate (4 screws) off your outter primary cover and with a flash light look at the top of your clutch pack and see if it's there...

Alright, I will pull it off tomorrow.

Anyone have some reccomendations as far as tools I should have on hand for this Big Dog. I live in a apartment so I would like to make as few trips as possible searching for the right tools.

Anyone have a picture of the jack shaft while looking through the inspection hole? I can't see much so a better idea would help

Did you put the bike in gear and try to rock it. Sometimes this will help if the jack shaft is stuck and not broken.

I did try putting it in gear and rocking it the night it happened before my I walked the bike home a mile.

Broken Bendix shaft. I hear they are replaceable and can be had at an automotive store.

Be careful and not torque the inspection cover screws too tight or you could break off the ears on the inspection cover.

Just pull that primary cover off at this point. Make life a whole lot easier.

Does anyone know what size bolt the Jackshaft is?

From what I have gathered from reading I will
1. disconnect battery
2. remove two bolts holding starter in place
3. disconnect cables to starter
4. remove primary cover
5. remove nut from jack shaft?


If I am missing anything please let me know. I hate to have to make several trips back and forth. any toold reccomendations would be excellent!

bike is a 07 pitbull right side drive BTW

You don't have a jackshaft. Its only in LSD bike. After you remove cable and green starter wire remove the two 5/16" bolts and pull starter out

I was able to get the starter off in no time. Sent the starter off to KaptinAmerika with Wild Steed Worx. Hopefully I will have the bike on the road the first part of next week. In the mean time now that the exhaust is off I have some detailing I need to get taken care of.

Alright guys, Wild Steed Worx got my starter and they already started to repair it! It was a broken pinion gear and shaft. Hopefully my bike will be back up and running this next week, since my birthday is on friday!

Thanks again for the recommendations and help guys! I love Strokers but I also love working on my own bike and saving a little cash!
