HELP WITH PDM INSTALL

Installed a PDM harness on a 2007 K9 today. Checked and all lights, horn, everything works. Went to start and ignition module comes on and when you hit the start button it kicks the ignition module off. If i hold the run button while hitting the start button, bike starts up fine. This harness has a start relay attached to it. If i stick a test light creating resistance on the second green wire on the start relay everything works fine. If i unhook the test light from the green wire, the ignition module kicks off when you hit the start button. Does the voltage play havoc with the PDM systen like the EHC? Do you need a minimum of 12.8 volts, because my voltage was below that. Desperatly need help. Also tried another ignition module and does the same thing.

I don't really know, but since you have to ground the test light to get it to work, maybe you need to ground the relay.

Do all the PDM kits have the starter relay in the harness? The instructions don't mention anything about it, but it is in the wiring diagram. Everything is grounded properely. I bought this kit 2 years ago and had it on the shelf. Bigdog sent me 3 new relays for the fuse box and an inline fuse for the wire going to the ignition since i purchased it. Said the part number of the relays in the fuse box, were the part numbers on some that had problems. I'm assuming everything else with the harness would be good.

I think i have my electrical problem solved. Won't know for sure until i start riding which probably won't be until May with the snow and weather we've been getting. Thanks Raywood for offering your expert services again. This site is the greatest.

That is great that Raywood was able to help you solve the electical issues with you dog. But would you let the rest of us know what the issue was and the what the fix was. That would be a great ending to this story. :whoop:

I had mounted the start run relay where the horn relay gets mounted. I saw on Fibersnakes pictures that he had his start run relay loose in with the wiring. Not sure what difference it would matter because it was mounted with a plastic bracket. Maybe by being mounted there it took away that little bit of extra resistence i needed to make it work. I also installed a new battery that i bought last year because my other battery load tested weak. Fibersnake was a great help with giving me advise. Thanks again to all my brothers on this site. Keep up the good work. Does anyone know what amperage the circuit breaker is on our bikes?

Still wondering what amperage the circuit breaker is on our bikes. Also does the speedometer still do the pulse sweep with the PDM install? I have a Medallion speedo.

There was a recall on some voltage Regulators back in 2007 or so and the CB on my bike was replaced with a 40Amp fuse running from a single distribution post to the Battery. The single distribution post was installed in place of the CB, and the Voltage Regulator lead was attached to new post along with one lead from the 40 amp fuse holder, the other end went to the Battery.

I don't know if the PDM calls for a CB or not, but that 40 amp fuse works good. No smoking VR yet :2thumbs:

Hey Ken. How long did it take you to do the PDM install? I plan on doing my 07 K9 this Saturday. Any tips, hints, or advice would be well appreciated.

It took about 8 hours, but when i was done all the wiring was tucked away and tie wrapped neatly under the electrical covers. I also heat shrinked all the connections on the backbone. Do not pull the red, blue yellow wire (I think that is the colors) out of the backbone for the ignition module and the coil. It is re-used and not part of the new PDM harness. Also do not mount the run start relay on the supplied bracket by the horn. It is for the horn relay. Also look at the wiring diagram not just the installation instructions. Before the install i held up the harness and made sure all my wire color combinations with the new harness were the same as the bike harness. Sometimes when they build the harnes they stick a colored wire going to a diffenrent color wire on the bike. The colors and places on the connector should all match. Let me know how you make out. By the way, i am no electrical expert. Good luck.

The problem with a circuit breaker is that it will reset itself then trip again and keep doing this until it fails because you wont know that something is wrong, then when it fails, if it fails in the on position, you let the smoke out of all the electronics (this is bad)
Replace the circuit breaker with a fuse and we won't have to listen to another horror story where the voltage regulator fried everything else on the scooter.

Keep us up to date.

C.C.Rider, keep us up to date on the install please. I am ordering either the WP or the PDM Monday. I am really interested in the ease of installation and which one people consider the better fix. I have read about the instructions that come with the WP set-up are kinda incomplete or confusing so I am really wondering how good the instructions for the PDM are? Also , how long did it take you to get the PDM after you ordered it?
Thanks,

Will do Advodka and on the time it took to get it was about 5 weeks. if you do decide to go with the PDM ask for Bob at Big Dog Performance he's great to work with. If you want to see the installation for the PDM go to Big Dog performance and download the installation instructions.

On the PDM new main harness, there is a cable that looks like a battery cable. Is it exactly that, a hot wire for the harness. I did not see the cable on the wiring diagrahm nor did i read anything that mentioned it. My common sense and what is right may be off. Thanks guys
