Help with starter replacement

Hello, I've read conflicting info on steps required in replacing a late model Big Dog starter. I have an 03' Mastiff and before I get into the job, will I need to remove the primary, or will the starter just bolt on with the 3 bolts?

Left side drive.... you will have to remove the outer primary cover to access the the jackshaft.

Before you do it go out and buy a couple primary gaskets and the primary oil so you can throw it right back together. The picture thing is a REALLY good idea too. That's what I did when I did my starter.
Also, search the forum for help. You'll certainly find a lot of info.

Don't replace your starter! We can rebuild it for you for $99 and it will be better than before.

Ok, new problem. I got the starter out and installed new one, but I can't get the jackshaft bolt to thread. Only thing I can think is that I placed the sleeve or coupler the wrong direction on the starter shaft. Would that cause my issue?

Your manual states that on LSD bikes BDM used three different bolt sizes from five different manufacturers.
There was 10-32, 1/4" and 5/16!!!!!!

Can you guys do anything about a cracked case? My housing is cracked from the once in awhile BAM:angry: when trying to start. I would like to see if I can get it repaired for a spare, no hurries right now.

Yes we can now weld cracked cases.
Depending on severity it runs about $25
Chrome repair is not included.

Now I feel stupid, used old bolt, didn't realize new starter had a new bolt in box, lol, was smaller. Sometimes the most perplexing issues have the easiest answers, lol. But of course after thinking I was back on the road, next prob. Tested before putting primary case back on, the pinion gear doesn't engage the clutch gear, pushes out but stops at gear, can't see how I have anything on the jackshaft wrong.

Hello Raywood, is that $99 still an accurate price for a rebuild? I just took my stock starter to a local electric shop and gave me a quote of around $235 and $20 to return it to me in pieces, lol!

I get dozens daily
Once you become an actual customer with me then I'm happy to give a phone number or if someone emails me and asks me to contact them with a phone number I will make contact and give them my number for future reference.
I know this seems like a weird way to do business but I am a one man shop and I have very little time to service my real customers let alone the constant phone calls I was getting from tire kickers and price hagglers when I actually had my phone number readily available on my web site.
