Another Metzeler tire question.

Anybody else that changed from Avon to Metzeler noticed how the Avon bead protect the rim while the Metzeler leaving it all exposed? I picked up my wheels yesterday after having new Metzelers mounted but realized when I was about to put them on the bike that the outer portion of the lip on my rim had scratches that with the Avon was invisible. I am now taking the wheel back and will spend the week end polishing the lip rather than riding.. Oh well, good thing I stacked up on a few brewskis...:cheers:

Hang on, I'll get the camera and post a pic.

OK, here is a pic of the tire to rim clearance using a straight edge touching the tire in front and rear.


Here is a close-up photo of the minimal tire/belt clearance and the full 1/2" of rubber outside the rim. I really don't see how it would be possible to scratch the rim yourself, my bet is that the shop scratched the rim with their tire changer.

Thanks for that picture. It clearly shows that your Metzeler does not have a rim protector like the Avon does either. Here is the rash on my rim, definitely not made by the shop or any it's machines, but clearly from curbs/streets. With the Avon I could not see it at all but with the Metzeler it shows clearly. I'll post a picture after the polish job, the end result will be perfect regardless....

That appears to be where the wheel was run on a FLAT TIRE that broke the bead to the rim, not curb damage.

Here is the Avon I remember, if this sidewall lets go, you will have hell to pay! Bear in mind, THIS IS A BRAND NEW TIRE WITH LESS THAN 100 MILES ON IT!!! First ride of the season in 2010.

I fully realize that this is the front wheel in the AVON pics, but there is not a rim protector that totally covers the edge of your wheel on this tire either. I still believe that the damage to your wheel was not caused by hitting a curb. It would be impossible for me to damage my rear wheel like your wheel is damaged by hitting a curb.

I have to agree, it doesn't matter which tire your're running. If you have a flat and ride on the rim your going to get damage like that. I agree with Bowhunter stated, that damage is from riding on the rim. I wouldn't even call that curb damage because that's way too high for curb riding. You would see more side damage I would think.

I agree 100%. Badly worded on my part. It's definitely from a flat tire scenario. However, on the Avon it was not visible at all while very visible with the Metzeler. But as you can see in the picture below, it's getting a makeover and will look new with the Metzeler as well.....

Guy's, i have nothing but praise for my Metzler.
It holds the road beautifully, wear is even, i ride it fairly hard and my rim looks like new.
The only time i have seen a rim like that is after a blow out and you try to ride home.
As for curbs hitting your rims, clutch cover or pipes should hit first if your that close.
