I had a lower base gasket blow out last fall so I decided to learn more about my bike and do the repair myself.......... I now have the cyl and heads back (decked, valve job, bored .010, new pistons/rings, studs and cometic mls gaskets) and I was reading about how to put the new rings on the piston and I dont get it?? I have the top comp ring, second comp ring I have a 3rd ring that looks like its smaller (the ends overlap eachother) i have no clue where this goes?? any help thanks

That is your oil ring. Put the oil ring in place followed by the two thin ones. Put one thin one on top and one on the bottom, of the oil ring make sure the end are 180 from each other. :2thumbs:

Have to gap them

The s&s manual shows the install plus how to space the gaps

Absolutely, you need to set ring gaps, you can't trust parts just because they are new. By the way if you are using S&S pistons did the machinist know if they were an A,B,C or D a thousandth or so doesn't sound like much but these things are set pretty tight for their bore size.

should have been an instruction sheet in the pack of rings. Tells about end gap and how to measure plus the oil ring instructions.

yup there was, what I didnt know was where the oil rail support ring went but I got it and now the pistons are in cyl/heads are in and torqued, im waiting for a top cover gasket for my trans, dont know why its taking so long (5wks) so far, they said Mon that it was on its way?? we will see!! then I can put the trans back in an shim it. any thoughts on shimming the trans?? my thoughts were to put on inner primarybolt to motor then to trans and check w/ feeler gauge?? thanks for all your help so far!!!!

I wish I had more money.
Moe did a really good how to on trans shimming. If im not mistaken it did involve bolting it to the inner and using a feeler gauge.

I've always read to mark the original shims and to replace the tranny using the same shims, making sure they were in the same place. That's the method I used when I had my tranny rebuilt and re-intalled it. No problems yet.
