Checking which CAM...

The specs in the 05 manual (TP rocker boxes) called for 4 turns (24 flats). There was also a note that said some noise (ticking) may be lessened by setting the pushrods at 3 turns (18 flats). I'm not sure what the 06 manual called for thou. I did the 3 turns and it just seemed to be to tight so I ended up going with 3 1/2 turns. I marked my pushrods with 1 dot on one side and 2 dots on the other side. Used a blacker marker which just wiped off easily.

If yoiu start off with 4 turns then want to try some thing else it just takes a little time. When ever I was doing mine I always had something else to be fooling with so I would not stare at the thing for 15-20 minutes.

Yup, all Manuals (05, 06, 07 & 08) call for 4 turns (24 flats)...

Lets say I am not happy with 4 turns and I want to go down to 3 1/2...
As the Zero lash was already acquired on the first adjustment... Would it be possible to just collapse 1/2 turn on each pushrod without waiting for the bleeding down?

Thanks for all the replies Gents. :2thumbs:

Franco, I just called S&S with your motor serial and they told me it was built buy them and not sent to BDM for assembly. Also it has a .546 cam and Travel limited lifters, thats all I asked him, didn't know what else you were looking for. S&S's website does have an online Tech support if you wanted to know other specs on your motor.
I don't know anything on the frame serial#

Why not move up to the S&S .600 cam? I know a few of us run those and get great performace without having to change valve springs. I do remember John Sachs saying that was the best all around cam in his opinion. I still have the stock lifters in mine as well. You'll need to pull the tappet/lifter off one side in order to get a feeler gauge behind the cam to check for clearance. Don't hold me against this, but I think the camshaft end play needs to be between .005 and .015. You can get a variety set of thrust washers from J&P cycles for pretty cheap.

Guys,

Franco,
Are you not satisfied with the way your dog is running? If not, then what does it matter which cam is currently in there? If you are happy with the way it's running, I wouldn't "fix" it. Also, the rocker boxes do not determine what size cam is in your bike. All the TP rocker boxes mean is that you have either an '05 or '06 model bigdog. You can keep those rocker boxes if you feel good about them and still put what ever cam you want to, assuming your valve springs support it.

I wish I had more money.
You could just open it up and look? All the time other people are putting in on your bike. Just look. Take all of an hour and then there won't be any more guessing.

Fair enough your point Mikie! Thing is I am in Afghanistan and the Bike is in Spain.. I wish I had it here with me (I would not ride it on these roads) but defenetly I would have plenty time to look at things! :D

Hi Guys,

I own a Big Dog K9 06 model, I´ve got it in Spain. Its 117 engine # is: G.-JE01231X

I would like to know what cam it has in it, the .546 or the .569 or??? and any other details you could give me, lifters type, etc. please.

Thanks for your help.

Franco.

A.

In 2006 that engine would have had TP rocker boxes , and Competition Cams, camshaft and valve springs. Other then that it is a standard emissions v117

Franco,

Isn't this what you are looking for? It looks like BWG56 was cool enough :2thumbs: to call S&S and you have the .546 from the information he got.
