Battery?

I have read more than a few times on here that a trickle charger is a must. I have one so not a big deal.. but why are BD's "hard" on batteries? Is it cause the motor is big and tough to turn over?

It is also the 2kw starter needed to turn them over.
Fortunately starter companies are making lower kw starters with more torque now. Unfortunately we with the right side drives do not yet have access to them.

The issue is increased though if you do not regularly check you're heavier electrical connections
 
You can find Hi torque 1.8kw starters for left side drives.
Make sure it has Compression releases in the heads.
They go a long way to extending the life of the starter and the battery.

also, another point to remember is that ,with the EHC in place, it takes roughly 2% of the battery per day to maintain the information stored in the EHC, therefore the need for the battery tender. so your battery always has a draw on it.

Ahh... there is the answer I was looking for. Ok, that makes perfect sense to me.

Compression releases? Sorry to be ignorant, I am learning as I go.

Tom... I did not know that... so what happens if you take the battery out for, lets say, a few months?

Does the EHC goes Brain dead? :D

cannot swear to it either way franco, seems to me like it would but it must be written into it so it doesn't lose it. never have had mine out for any extended length of time so no practical experience.

Ding-Ding-Ding! We have a winner! Post #5 narrows it down. I too could not believe the current demand these days. So I have this setup. Set it to the ground side of the battery. There is nothing to save, unless Bad suggests the opposite?

Key on, ROM is the chip with the saved [Memory] data it [Only Reads]. RAM is going to be seen as the key turns on, a [Random] set of numbers are sent in and now is [Memorized] as those numbers are being [Accessed] by the EHC. And those are any sensors pinging a resistance number the EHC 'recognizes' as valid, or sends a code stating, "Huston, we have a problem."

:cheers: Good Call, Butcher! Why? Because, if you start the bike, the CCA is a given. The ride replenishes the load taken. The ride continues to charge the battery; where you are not setting a trickle to it within the next day/weak or so; is the next ride. Week or weak, it does not sound like a starter; if I've had the bike for 2 years and have yet to trickle it. I kill that 2% dead and leave the key on so I know I turned the bike off. :2thumbs:

Nothing will happen to the data stored on the EHC and there is no draw on the battery by the EHC when the bike is shut off. Its just like a computer on your desk. Turn it off and there is no draw. Turn it on and the draw starts. All the data is stored on flash memory.
Of course do something severe to the EHC and bad things will happen but I am speaking strictly in the normal.

When to say check the heaver electrical connections are you talking about the battery connections only or are you talking some other connections. Other than making sure the connections are tight what should be done?
 
I keep dielectric grease in all the small connectors and battery anti corrosive gel on the heavy connectors
Heavy connections being both battery connections, positive solenoid connection at starter and starter motor lead connection at solenoid

Amen to the dielectric grease Curtis, I am still on my factory battery and it still cranks like a new one. Two things, I filled all connections with dielectric grease when the bike was brand new as well as the battery connections and I always keep it as well as my other toys on a battery tender. No problems with anything electrical so far, knock on wood!

if no daw on battery from EHC when key is off then where is the draw coming from?
my yamaha can be parked for 7 months and still start.
my k9 about 2 days.
I thought i read that carb ehc draw 1.4 and efi draw 2.4???

this is why I want to re-wire it to shut barttery off completely
