Gas Caps? again?

i've done a search and most of the post are pretty old and some of the links are dead so i thought i'd throw out the question again.

it looks like i have the original '03 caps with the paint savers (caps get stuck). it sounds like a pain to take the paint savers off and a big risk of screwing up the paint so i'd rather keep the paint savers and get a cap that fits and doesn't look like crap. some of the custom ones people have made are pretty cool but a little spendy especially if you need two. i kept reading out lowdown chop shop but that site wants me to go to Cancun.. which is not a bad idea but doesn't get me a pretty gas cap which is my current obsession for some screwed up reason. anyway can someone run me through the options for the current setup or reiterate the problems/risks of getting rid of the paintsavers?

thanks:moped:

The issue you will have is trying to match up threads for the Landmark paintsavers. If you remove them you can run any HD cap. Lots of those to choose from. If you jack the paint removing them just look for a larger diameter cap that will cover the oopsy. Tape around the paint saver first and take your time removing it. A heat gun will help you loosen the JB Weld they used installing the paintsavers. Other then removing the paintsavers your options are rather limited. You can order new Landmark caps from J&P Cycles, or use some fine grit sandpaper to sand the current cap threads so they won't swell and stick. Just my two cents.....

my 2cents i had trouble getting mine off especially when it is hot i did as hman said and took some fine paper and carefully sanded the threads haven't had any trouble since

Thanks..I hate the look of the gas cap, looks pretty plain and cheap compared to the rest of the bike so maybe i'll try getting the paintsavers off. do you know if the right and left side threads are the same as the caps? right is righty tighty left is lefty tighty? im guessing short of having the tool or big ass ez out (i saw posted here) that you can just tap it around with a punch?

Well you can use a punch but I would think that will be more dangerous to your paint. If you are serious about removing them shoot me a PM n I'll loan you the removal tool I made.

I wish I had more money.
Make sure to. Heat the paint saver a bit too. Either a heat gun or hair dryer. That softens the adhesive.

Could you post a pic of the tool?
