Trouble starting,!!!

After almost a week of searching forums after and at work I have no answer. If this discussion has taken place before plz let me know. My 05 mastiff has been giving me starting issues. It stays on a tender and when I go to crank it it spins slow. If I choke it it won't spin at all. The only way I can get it to crank is jumping it off. Which leads me to believe its the battery. My only problem with that is we load tested it at work and the tester said 451 cca. I'm not sure that is true though cause its a Harley soft ail battery which is rated at about 270-280. I'm just looking for some advice or opinions on what to try before by a part I don't need. By the way my battery reads 12.7 volts before starting and it drops to 6.5-7 Vic when I hit the start button.

Sounds like you have a bad cell in the battery. I can't give you any advice on which one to buy, but a few people where talking batteries a while back.

If it's not the battery, check your compression reliefs and make sure they're working when you hit the run button. If not depress them when you try a start and see if that helps...

How old is the battery? What you are saying it sounds like the battery, but usually the lights will flash and the horn will beep when you try to start with a low battery. If its more that 2 years old I would start with the battery. I have had good service with HD batteries.

PS, these electrical systems don't like to be jump started. In an emergency only jump start with the donor vehicle engine not running.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I jumped it off the other day. Rode it for a while, got home and I killed it. Tried cranking and it fired right up. If I'm correct this should eliminate the starter, regulator and compression reliefs. Correct me if I'm right plz

Take a jumper cable to the frame to the engine to the battery (-) post. The current draw may not have a good ground. With the jumper cable, you have 4 grounds to connect so there is no doubt from the battery neg to the other 3, you have the engine-frame-trans connected all up.

If that starter is still occurring to no turn over the engine = Battery.

The proof is in the pudding - if it drops to 6.5-7v you aint gonna get that stroker to turn over. Go buy a new one 310-320 CCA. The more you spend the longer it will probably last, your call on what is in the budget now.

Sounds like a the battery giving up the ghost,, and cooler weather doesn't help matters either. Just a thought,, I put the best interstate battery in mine last year and it does fine in warm weather,,, cooler or cold weather it doesn't crank it great,,, I think as wood said , a braile next go round.
