Hard to ride???

Energy One
Hi guys, long time BD lover, fIrst time poster....

I'm looking at an 05 ridgeback on line and love the bike but have never ridden a raked out chopper. I own a 06 Dyna low rider now and my biker friends say I'll hate the ride of a chopper because of the hard tail and the rake. Hard to turn and an unpleasant ride. They say ride before you even consider buying it but it's out of state and winter time here in Indiana. What's your thoughts??? Do u just get used to it like any other bike or is it something that is true and not so safe? Seems the majority of the ridgebacks for sale that I'm looking at are 03 to 07 with 3 to 5k miles in them. That's not many miles for a bike that old and the price drop from new to $13k is a lot! Is there something I'm not seeing???

Thanks guys!

Jarrod

Its no biggie. It will be a different ride than what you have now. Going around corners will be different. But its something you'll get use to. As for comfort most say that they are very comfortable for being a ridged. I'm sure someone else that rides a ridged will chime in and give you advice.

I own both a HD Night Train and a 2009 K-9. The handling between the two isn't that much different. The K-9 is a bit different at low speeds and you need more real estate to turn but it's something you get used to very quick. Personally I would never own a bike with no rear suspension. The roads in PA are way too rough for that.
I'm actually thinking of selling my Big Dog if you are interested. I'm in PA. You can email me for pictures and details. Might be something you are looking for.

Just like anything it's what you are used to. The cool factor alone will trump any negatives :D You just have to pay attention to the road surface a little more cause a pot hole will send spinal fluid out of your eyeballs

But if you you don't like people constantly bugging you about how nice your ride is and don't care for power of a big V twin then I would not buy one :D

I am 57yrs old and went from a soft tail custom to a ridgeback with zero issues. Do you avoid bumps and cracks in the road or potholes. heck yea, but don't you do that anyhow with your dyna? it's not really a bike that you'll go out and ride for 4 or 5 hrs straight but many a harley rider tell me they can't go that long either in the saddle. the looks, the power, and the attention you will get is addictive! by the way....do an intro if you post ever again.

Looks like it's up to your back. Also there are very few bikes that you ride more than a few hours before needing fuel from what I have seen. If you know anyone with a ridged frame bike, jump on and give it a test ride. I'm only 62, but my softail Bulldog beats my back up after a few hours ride while my streetglide doesn't do as bad. I guess it's the riding profile/angle on the Bulldog that gets me. Good luck in your hunt.

Im sixty and ride a ridgeback. I riden from kc to sturgis and all around the black hills even iron mountain road with no issues. I came from a Heritage Sringer and the front end feels the same. Take it slow in the beginning and you will be fine.

Not So, I would rather ride my Chopper in town than my Ultra!! It handles fine and doesn't take much time at all to get used to!:2thumbs:

I have an 05 Ridgeback, and wouldn't have anything else. As for the ride, it is as smooth as the road is. It's an awesome bike, I love the clean look of the rigid frame, and like I said, wouldn't have anything else.:2thumbs:

I've got a Pit that rides great. Not a problem running the road for hours. Buy one and leave your HD buds in the mirrors......

The only issue you might have is if you have big problems with your back now . The ride is bumpy but well worth it. If it has a 300 on the rear you will notice you have to force it into tight corners . You actually are piloting the bike not just droning . It will be a blast Go for it.

Welcome Jarrod if you are concerned about the rigid frame of the ridgeback the K9 has the same rake and look with a rear suspension. I went from dirt bikes, to a $400 Suzuki, straight to a BIGDOG K9, I took to it like a pig to shit, rides great no control or steering issues and comfortable ride for me and the sweetheart. Good luck:cheers:

Agrees with Reaper 100% . I have a 2004 Ridgeback and other than Reaper's scooter I would not have any thing else. It takes few weeks to get used to pulling out of the driveway , slow easy turning going slow. Once you get used to it you will love it, like a streched out rocket ship too.:choppersmiley: My daughter and son in law ride harleys and she raggs me to get trade it in for something like that ( she is :loony: )... No way! It ain't a trailer rider, the ridged frame rides and I quote " as smooth as the road is". I am 6'5" and it fits me like like rocking chair, wouldn't ride anything else.

BIG DOG WARNING!! Here are some issues I have encountered with my big dog pit bull: A loud powerful rumble emitting through the exhaust, high glare from over abundant chrome, difficulty riding in public unnoticed, neck snapping acceleration, difficulty staying off the saddle, difficulty in reducing riding time, often unable to take the short way home, hassled by females wanting a ride, the 300 series rear tire intimidates other bikes around town...oh and I accidentally sucked a harley softail up one of my exhaust pipes while passing it the other day! Consider these things very carefully before you purchase!

Amen Brother!!!!!

I love my Ridgeback! Second hard tail I have owned and as stated on a smoothe road it rides like a softail. The stretch helps the ride in straights little different to turn but you get used to it. Not going to burn up the Tail of the Dragon but your going to look a hell of a lot cooler doing it!:2thumbs:

My Pitbull is a Ridged and rides great, no issues, if there are any the looks of the bike alone make you forget all about the occasional rough bump or pot hole. Take it slow at first until you get used to the 300 tire, it does indeed handle different form a HD or bikes with smaller rear tires. Cannot compare the looks next to a softy HD...Big Dogs are just beautiful bikes.
