Lifter removal question??

I got a real interesting answer from S&S on the question about lifter limiters...

They said I didn't need them if I have compression releases??... reasoning is that they help starting by not letting the lifters bleed down so much when sitting. They also will keep the valve train a little quieter just after first starting. Cam size doesn't make a difference according to them.

And they said they help also for extended high RPM use. I'm not going to be doing any road racing in the near future with my big dog...:lol:

This is what I think I know about limiters and that doesn't necessary make it true. When adjusted properly limiters will only allow for .050 pump up at valve float. I think you will know it before that and at 6000 RPM will we float them anyway. On the other side they will only collapse.. 050 before going solid acting more like a solid lifter cam. I'm not sure if that is necessary if the cams are ground for the hydraulic lifters. The next one is really important if you do not have compression releases. When the engine is not running the valve springs will collapse the smaller lifter springs to the bottom. This makes the cam look like a short duration cam when you try to start it causing high compression starts and jackshaft problems. The travel limiters limit how far the lifter can collapse.The long duration high performance cams bleed the high compression off at low rpm because of the late intake valve closing event allowing them to be started. If some one else know about this feel free to chime in. I wrote this to expedite a little discussion on the subject.
